Awesome. Thank you much!

No idea, outside my area. Download trial, use it now while you wait for your box to arrive!

Upgrade, buy or get the free trial and have your brain sucked out of your head!

Best Native .R3D editorial workflow in existence. Also anything QT Player will play AVID can natively access. NO TRANSCODING to import.

Definitely a solid piece of kit. Media Composer does file based work flow well and efficiently.

All -

For those looking to try out Media Composer v5, you can download a full functioning 30 day trial here:

Have fun!

Michael,

Tried running 30-day MC 5 on Macbook Pro running OS X 10.6.3

Successfully linked thru AMA all Pro RES flavours and H.264. But When Playing H.264 QT, white flash frames and Bad corrupt frames appear on my both Source and Record monitor. Do you have any idea what it may be?

I have been playing around with MC5 for a few hours now. It definitely seems more user-friendly - with several "inspirations" from Vegas Pro 9. Still, Vegas remains my choice, though it is hard to ignore the merits of Premiere Pro CS5.

Subhadip Sen,

We are not here to argue which is better. All people who worked on Avid knows its better NLE. The thread only answers how Avid has evolved to became more user friendly and requirements these days.

Be happy with your Vegas and PP CS5.

AVID MC 5 changes the way you looked at Avid from now on.

AVID at-last given what users wants...

Hi all,
I haven’t try MC5 trial, but I just discuss with an Avid guy at a Paris Avid event, and he told me that the AMA way takes a lot of CPU time (too much for a real project I guess), so transcoding still the best way to work with R3D.
And the Redrocket can’t be use for playback, only rendering.
Avid is more user-friendly, but it doesn’t truly give what users want…

Neither am I. I have used Avid extensively. I take every single option out there - be it Avid, Premiere, Blender or VirtualDubMod - extremely seriously, and I consider the merits and drawbacks of each alternative with extreme consideration and care. At no point am I saying which is better, because this depends largely on every person's working style and artistic motivations. In fact, it is you who is declaring Avid as "better". I would never do that. I was merely stating my personal choice - it was simply a side note. I think it is quite clear that the thread is designed to serve as a place where people leave their opinion on Media Composer 5, and I left my first impressions - I am impressed, and it is extremely user-friendly, but it is not going to be my personal choice, yet. At no point does this mean that it won't be yours - because clearly Avid is your choice, and I wholeheartedly respect that. If you resent anyone else using anything other than Avid as using an inferior NLE, then I obviously disagree, but let's agree to disagree.

There's no need to create an argument here. Let us just move on and let each other state our opinions. Every human being is vastly different, and it is not so odd that your preference will be different from others. You never know what you may learn from someone else. I do apologize if mentioning Vegas or Premiere in this thread offended you, though.

Well I'm extensive user of FCP / AVID and not other way around.

Is it worth 2.5K though?

I haven't downloaded the trial yet but 5 FCS license/workstations versus 2 MC5 license/workstations is a little hard to ignore.

i tested MC5

on a 2008 imac with 4GB ram and a ATI RadeonHD2600,
i`ll get with 4k files and 3 videotracks
realtime playback in yellow/yellow mode.
plus 1 layer has some CC on top of it.

quality of the picture in Y/Y mode is totally fine for me.
i am simply amazed.

Michael.
Just wondering, is there a way after finished editing with RAW files, to export the resulting timeline as DPX sequence, with or without RedRocket? This way there would be no conforming issues and you could start grading right away. Can MC5 even do a full debayer and if it can, is it limited in resolution to 1080?
Thanks in advance.

Avid MC should have done this step years ago, inspired by DS way. Good it comes now when Apple dedicates their money on Iphone4 and other toys (wich will make more money than the video tools).

I think Avid is getting back on track, because Apple is getting less interested on this market share.

Just frustrated that "the industry leader" didn't have a more proactive approach and instead of clients waiting and begging for a tool, digging into workarounds, they should have made it. Perhaps AVID was loosing time with some CEO changes...
