I am a software engineer working on the Media 100 Suite application. Media 100 Suite is a Macintosh-based nonlinear video editor. While this is not a product announcement, we are investigating support for the Red camera. At this stage of development, we would like to get Red user feedback about our implementation of the Red workflow. In a few weeks, we are planning to have a small scale Beta release of the Red-enabled Media 100 Suite. The goal of this release is to enable Red users to tell us what works well and what needs improvements.

If you are interested in working with us on this project, please contact us at RedBeta@Media100.com.

wow Media100 is still going?
This used to be a great editing system on the Mac before FCP.
I had hoped Pegasus was going to take Media 100 to new heights but its turn out to be PC only which killed it for me.

Good to see you guys are still kicking and I wish you all the best with your new product developments.

Just sent you an email.
I have my system from 1997 boxed up in storage!
Yes, it was an awesome system. I used to be SUPER fast on the Media 100. Then FCP came out. The first time I made an edit on FCP and saw the word "UNRENDERED" I knew we had all taken a giant step backwards.
Perhaps there is a nice convergence of M100 and RedRocket for a fast, on-set grading/editing workflow...
Cheers,
Harry

So glad I jumped ship back in the 90's! While I was using the LX editing 640x480, here comes Apple with the firewire DV that crippled my hardware. So I said "I'm not bailing out on my LX"!

I call Media 100 and ask for an upgrade DV board. $3500!!!! Are you guys nuts!!!

While my friends around me were editing with identical features I tried to hold on as long as I could. Don't get me wrong, it was cool while it lasted. I paid the system off just in time but the competition ate it alive...

It is interesting that they are still going. Don't really know how it stacks up today but Media100 probably was the easiest to use full featured pro computer based editing system ever.

I got out when I had a chance to use the first DV camcorder in the US somewhere around 1995 (Ivan I think it was an LX). At the time we were OEM manufacturing housings for Panasonic sold under their name. The product manager showed me the first working PV-DV1000 a few months before it was released and I talked him into letting me use it on an ABC 20/20 shoot. After using it, it was clear to me that it was just a matter of time before capture card based systems would be obsolete and I proceeded sell all three of the Media100s we had.

Unfortunately it was a little too late to sell mine. I bought it for 10k and had it on ebay with a $10.00 starting bid. Now it's sitting pretty on my garage shelf.

Easy guys. I don't see anyone from the Apple development team around asking for input. I agree Media 100 has not been the most customer friendly company in the past, but let's see if they have a different approach to the RED workflow.

My non-linear timeline:

Early days - 60K for EMC - 2 3Gig harddrives not included - 3K each.
EMC goes belly up
Middle ages - Media 100 - 30K for system - Media 100 goes belly up
The end - EDIT* - discreet logic - 20K for system. Discreet decides to get out of the non-linear biz.

I get out of the edit biz and just direct/shoot!

(However I did get sucked into a older but nice FCP setup 2 months ago for 1K)

That's my story!

Yeah I loved working on my XS, it was very cool tool at the time.

I would be great to hear from the company and hear their prospective on how they lost so many users in the Pegasus (844 or whatever it was called) days.

I'm sure such a discussion can only aid the company in being better.

Media 100 has definitely lost the cachet it once had and certainly will have an uphill battle to win back lost customers. But if the RED workflow is a fresh and efficient approach, they may have a winner. Otherwise....

I would love to see Media 100 be able to use Red R3Ds!

I have a client who's favorite editor loves Media 100 and he dose not like Red.

I am all for it!

Wow, this post reminds me of how new I am to this world. When I became involved with video editing, your options were the three A's (Apple, Adobe, Avid). Great to see that there are more options out there.

Just to clarify...

Media 100 never actually went belly-up. The company hit financial problems after the development of the 844x and changed hands a few times. It settled in with BorisFX several years ago.

The folks over at BorisFX have been supporting new product development efforts since that time. They also took it off of proprietary hardware and have been using the same AJA hardware as FCP. Their bundle with Media 100 and Red (the BorisFX compositor) is actually worth looking at if you haven't done so lately.

I have no horse in this race, but if you had issues with the old company, that's been water under the bridge for years and years.

Cheers,
Oliver

All this brings back great memories. Started off with Fast video machine and moved to Media 100. At my first NAB in Vegas (95), Media 100 was a big draw. What was the best non linear editing system? Avid or Media 100. No one else was really in the running.

I am glad to see them still kicking and screaming and Applaud their attempts to improve the Red workflow.

The folks over at BorisFX have been supporting new product development efforts since that time.

Same NAB. Remember a little guy from Russia selling compositing software. His name was Boris. Gave him 300 bucks for his latest Boris FX. Funny how things work out.

I don't know if you can bring Media 100 back Marshall but I wish you the best.
