Well, this product description made me laugh out loud.

RED Carbon Fibre rods:

100% Satisfaction Guaranteed

WARNING: may explode.

I guess they want people to buy the steel rods?

Jim's said this a number of times.. One of his favorite lines.. As for me.. Not worried.. We're talking some SERIOUS weight to get them to explode.

Jay

Hi Jay,

I have had 5 sets of carbon fiber ski poles explode, always seems to happen when it's very cold and off piste on a glacier a long way from home.

Stephen

So what is it that makes the Red rods prone to explode? Do they have a special nitroglycerin coating?

I regularly use cheap carbon fiber rods from both Cavision and Cinevate and, well, they've never exploded.

I'll stay with steel.

Yeah, I like the ability to tote my Red around by the rods, I wouldn't do that with carbon fiber.

It's not weight that causes failure. Any chipping or denting causes a significant decrease in the rods strength. WAY more than with steel or titanium rods. When they fail the term used is "catastrophic failure"

Not good when you have a camera on a jib 20 feet above an actress. And 10kg of Lens, matte box, and remote focus on the rods.

There's a story of a mattebox falling on Britney Spears, I think it was, back around 2001. Technocrane, above a bed, etc etc. Or something like that.

Right on Mike. I would not ever consider using CF rods with those big old zooms and a bunch of other dodads hanging off them. I mean really is a pound or two more going to kill ya?

It's more like ounces. The weight of the rods is so negligible when you start thinking about batteries, etc. The benefit just doesn't out way the risk. Some AKS just use a single screw point to hold to the rods, as opposed to a clamp. That would destroy a CF rod in an instant.

AKS? Why would you mount iris rods on your assult rifle?

Yeah, I was thinking the same thing. ??? This is no place for your esoteric weapon-speak. Plus, if you're going to mount anything, it should be an ibex.

AKS is camera assistant verbage for Accessories. you knew that.

The diameter and wall thickness on these type of rods is such that they are extremely strong. If you get them to fail, then something truly horrible has happened to your camera, and at that point, wouldn't you want a weak link to break before it ripped the body casting apart? They are also stiffer than steel which means less flex at the ends, which is good when you have lens motors out at the end of long rods.

Don't fear the fiber.

I was over visiting a local equipment manufacturer... don't know if I can say who yet, I'll check if I can - but anyway, they are making 19mm rods that are slightly heavier than CF and MUCH lighter than steel.... they're an aluminum composite or something... about the same strength as the steel.

And, they're only $10 more (each) than Red rods.

Could be a well-produced CF tube with an Aluminium sheath. Difficult to get the tolerances right but it could be a great combo. Rigidity of CF but the dent resistance of Aluminium alloy...
