Is there any reason i couldn't shoot a single continuous take of approx 100mins (shooting 4k, 2:1, 25fps, redcode 36 - approx 170gb) to the Red hard drive?

as long as you got enough battery you should be fine.

Might have to worry about overheating.
Did a 50 min. straight interview in the south of france this summer and it almost shut down on me.

What about working with a take this long in FCP and the various RED and 3rd party apps?

Stephen we regularly shoot up to 100mins 4k 25fps RC36 16:9 (with 2 cameras) without any problems (we need to use the Switronix dual battery mount so we have enough battery life). Haven't had a crash/power out yet, but if it occurs I understand the footage will still be OK, up to about the last 2 mins, as the R3Ds segment into 2GB (about 2mins) "mini" files. We make copies asap!

Sam: no probs in FCP--we multiclip edit using the _M proxies. Have rendered and sent to Color, which was a pain before the update--haven't done a 100+min (fcp-->color) edit with the upgrade yet tho'.

How do you go from fcp to color?

I would rarely if ever shoot 100 minutes in one take but I regularly do 30 minute non stop interviews. I often wondered if these long files would present a problem in either recording on the camera or in post.

Two weeks ago we ran four RED cameras for 150 minutes in one take - no problems.

Agreed, there should be no problems with this.

Just make sure that you give the camera enough time to complete the QuickTime reference movies after such a long take though.

If you unmount the media too quickly, the QT reference files won't be there and if you need those in post you will have to re-generate them using RED Alert!
