While flipping through the manual once more to revise my knowledge on the RED ONE I was wondering what would actually happen, and what would be the result, when I would uncheck the "max" box.
Would i be able to shoot something if i leave this unchecked or will the camera transform and run off crying to its mommy?

RDC improved their RC28 codec with release 15. However, some people cried foul because the new codec was mucking with playback in post so RDC provided for a fallback to their original codec in build 16 with the "Max" button. Simply turn it off for the original codec. Otherwise, leave it on for the latest and greatest.

Thanks a lot for the explanation.

This gives me way more information than the RED manual told me. There it only told me to leave it on... Didn't let know why, though. Now I know and I feel enlightened. Thanks, Michael.

I thought I read that having max checked may screw up realtime transcoding/recording with a scratch system. Anyone?

Does that mean "max" only affects RC 28 recording an doesn´t influence RC36 ?
Thanks for the explanaition, was also great for me to get an information what´s it for.

MAX mode

The Ops Guide says all there is to know about this issue i.e

" Note: Leave MAX box checked, unless recording 4K 16:9 and needing real time decode. "

The " not MAX " selection will allow 4K 16:9 footage to decode faster, and that has been a benefit for some workflows that need 4K 16:9 footage to decode at 24 fps or faster. But if you shoot 4K HD you will likely get a similar speed increase and if you shoot 3K or 2K it's not relevant.

So the bottom line is we'd prefer it if you leave MAX boxed checked (enabled)

It does affect what can play back in realtime. System dependent of course, but on the new high powered Scratch machines 4K 16:9 RC36 29.97 is affected by Max, and 4K HD 23.98 through 29.97 is affected. In other words, not guaranteed to playback without dropped frames.
