  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Mattebox recommendation light, not too expensive?

The fact that I can't find the price anywhere is quite unnerving. How much are they???

Yup, best lightweight matte box system available is the Viv. Not the cheapest though (but is Arri quality). Has the widest viewing angle of any matte box, exclusive filter stages that are easily added or removed, 2 or 3 stages, optional 138mm filter bellows, clamp on or rod mount, with soon coming swing away add on, and many more features. Bright Tangerine is owned and operated by Andy, a long time engineer at Arri. So quality and features are unmatched.

I just bought the Viv so now I own a Strummer and Viv if anyone would like a demo. They are both amazing, just needed the lighter Viv setup for a documentary I'm shooting. Viv is the perfect size for Epic/Scarlet.

I received a quote from Curt, I must have deleted it since I can't find it. The VIV was around 2 grand, and Strummer a little over 3 (from memory). They're not cheap, though I hear they're amazing.

Would love to hear what you get for that extra 1 - 2 grand, compared to something like the Movcam MM1. On paper they seem quite close.

I decided to order something completely different than the standard matte boxes out there. I just picked up a Sympla system:

I wanted something to go back and forth between my DSLRs and Scarlet with EF Lenses. I haven't been able to find any reviews on it, but I decided take the leap and see if it's any good. I like the idea of a flexible, collapsible and affordable mattebox so I hope this one does what I need it to.

you have to contact a distributor to build you a quote, but a basic 2 stage version bare bones run for $1800+ depending on the options you want to add. They're a brand new company and all business is done through distributors...

Did you watch the review videos on Vimeo?! You'll see why they are $1,000 more than the cheaper options. Keep in mind they are built like an Arri, with more advanced features...

I would totally recommend the Arri LMB-15 (3-stage) for a lightweight mattebox. Its an extremely robust mattebox with the typical Arri build quality. It'll run you around USD2500. The only downside is that you'll have to buy different clamps for different lens diameters as its a clip-on. Great for steadicam work.

[h=3]Has anyone tried Tilta 4x5.650" Carbon Fibre Matte-Box MB-T04?[/h]
