  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Matte Box; Options Today..

What weight could you guys live with? If the mattebox is 4-5 pounds but its built like a tank would that work?

4-5 pound, is that incl. french flag, sidewings, 19mm swing away, 4 filter trays ?
For a lightweight configuration would be too heavy, for everything else 5 pounds are fine, imo.
What are the specification so far, what kind of MB do you build ?

If I can get two of them quickly. Yes. Built like a tank is good. It could be that The Red Rock, at $500, if the down-and dirty light weight and yours would be serious studio - are there weights published on the Red Rock?

Hi Curt,

I think you may get many answers here. Personnaly I wouldn't want something that heavy. Considering many Red customers are stepping up from smaller cameras, I would think they will want to try and keep their cameras not too big and not too heavy. Check out the tripod discussions, weight is a big concern.

Yes it needs to be strong, but your talking here about 1.5 x the weight of the Arri MB20, right ?

The problem with Red is it's so modular, people are going to be using them in so many different configurations. I would think though that most people buying Reds are doing so because of it's price point, which means they will be shooting on a budget. Working with bigger, heavier gear makes things more complicated, therefore more expensive.

Lighter is better, and cheaper in the long run.

My 2 centimes, cheers,
Damien

The only problem I would have with that is that would be without the filters. They don't weigh a ton, but add 3 and you've got yourself another pound of weight.

A heavy, but substantial matte box is not a problem for me, for my primary lens, the Cooke 18-100. For hand-held, SteadiCam type use, a lighter lens will be fitted and can carry a clip-on box.

I don't believe any of the lower cost matte boxes will work for my Cooke which requires 6.6" filters. If someone knows of such a beast, I'd appreciate a point to it.

By the way, the cost from Arri for a fully loaded 6.6 matte box 14 and follow focus is around 14K.

Good shooting and best regards,

Leo

The weight is looking to be around 5 pounds.. that includes two 5.65x5.65 filters, Pola, flags, and swing out mechanism. Without the swing out its closer to 3.5 pounds.

I'm not sure what a fully decked out MB20 weighs... I got the weight over the phone and have no idea what the configuration was. Maybe someone can weigh the MB20 and give us weights for the various configs.
