  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Matte Box; Options Today..

I was going to ask the same thing..

I think they are releasing pretty soon though..Their website still says End Of Summer 2007.. I plan to buy the Redrock as well. For $500, you can't beat that..

That's true. I registered for a reservation but have yet to hear from them.
Hope to get some updates soon.

Has the VFS released any kind of specs or images? I'd love to see how it racks up against the competition. They're endorsed by Red, so they must be awesome - not to put any pressure but it would be wise for VFS to get a mattebox out there before November 10, assuming Red still is planning on delievering 400 cameras. That to me is really when production kicks up a few gears and you're going to have a lot of hungry, desperate people, looking to stop their cameras down to shoot outdoors..

I think im definitely going to get the matte box from Redrock, whenever that ships, cant beat the $500 price tag...also, what follow focus are you guys going to get?

I'm going with the VFS Impero Pro remote and the RED Motors for follow focus. My best estimate is $3500 for 3 RED Motors and $1200 for the VFS Impero Pro. I think the Standard VFS Impero will be around $750 and should be ready by the end of the year. I've never heard any ETA (or price) for the RED Motors.

Yes, Cavision does look pretty awesome - I'd spend that.. Anyone have any ideas if it works with Red ok ?

Also consider the Petroff series of matte boxes. They are comparable in price to the Cavision. For example:

P-45-2W - Wide Angle Matte Box 4x5 Basic Unit, 2 Filter Stages, 2 Filter Holders, Top Flag, Lens Insert - $1630

Not sure if it's been posted but I got a email from Bernie at Cavision today. Their new 6x6 matte box lists for $2599 and will be available in early October. Description is as follows:

"6x6 hard shade matte box. Ideal for large & wide angle lenses; features 1 stationary & 2 rotating filter stages; includes 3 universal filter trays which accept 4x4, 4x5.65, 4x6, 5x5, 5x6, 5.65x5.65, & 6x6 filters; includes 19mm rods support system with film plate, top french flag, side flaps, rubber back cover & carrying case. Additional adapter rings may be required to step down to different lens sizes."

I had a Cavsion on our SDX900 a couple of years ago and while it was no Arri it was quite useable and held up extremely well.

Why ARRI and why not Cavision or Petroff ?

Both the Arri MB and FF seem like better quality, finished products. Also the MB20 seems more configurable to a light weight setup capable of 4x5.65 filters, as well as an all accesorised set-up for cinematic work.

With rental to high end commercial and feature work being important to me, as well as my own gigs, I either want to buy

(a) the best quality without a ridiculous price i.e. Arri (snob factor has some value in the film world :greedy: )

OR

(b) something from Curt (or Redrock) that doesn't require a big spend but is still great quality - best value for money (if it's not up to the big jobs I can just rent the mack daddy 6x6' Arri when needed).

make sense?

the cavision and petroff don't deliver on either (a) or (b) for me
