I know there has been a lot of Matte Box discussion. A lot of people are holding out for either Redrock or other more affordable solutions that are still not on the market.. my question is, what are you people that have REDS today or are getting them within the next few months doing about your matte box solutions?

I just want to invest in something that does the job, I"m not interested in buying something that costs almost as much as my Red-zoom lens.. I am also not interested in buying a flimsy piece of plastic that will break in 2 days either..

I went to B&H website and there are many flavors and options to choose from but I"m not sure which ones go best with the Red..

So, what are you guys doing about it?

-Anyone know what matte box they used on Red #22 (fx guide review)?

I'm in the same boat; deciding on both Matte Box and Follow Focus.

My primary lens will be our Cooke 18-100, so I'll need a Matte Box that takes 6.6" filters.

I'm getting quotes from Chrosziel and Arri, both excellent quality but certainly not inexpensive.

Will solutions from Red be available before 2008? Other ideas?

Good shooting and best regards to all,

Leo

follow focus is in the works by Curt van Badinsky - I think Red and him have a good relationship as the motor, originally thought on/of by CvB was bought by RED.
Hence, CvBs follow focus could be something like the "officially supported" FF.

Curt's also making a Matte box too right? Does anyone have any details about that, like when he's releasing it? If it something worth waiting for, I'll just rent when appropriate. I've tried but I just can't justify spending $4,000 + on a mattebox.

Hi Richard,

Curt's brother John has some info here http://viewfactor.net/forum/index.php?topic=18.0 fourth post down. I hope this helps...

Your welcome... [you got me on the "..." LMAO]

Looks like an Arri LMB-5 clip on. Good as a solid, inexpensive (relatively), lightweight solution, but bear in mind that there is no option for side flags and the filter stage doesn't rotate.

Cheers

i own a Chrosziel MB 450-01. i hope it will fit with the red 18-50

Arriflex accessories are one of the best. LMB-5 is a very usefull matte box and I use on my set of lenses. Some lenses in the set have different front diameter and what Arriflex did for me is manufactured different adapters so I just change the adapter on the LMB-5 when I change to a lens with a different front diameter.
There is also a solution for the non-totating filter option. There is a company in Germany VANTAGE FILM GmbH which make 4x5 filter holders in which the Pola will rotate.
The main problem with the LMB-5 is the side rails which made of plastic and tend to break when you tighten the filter holder. There is a solution by changing them to a custom made light metal one like aluminium.

Gotta chime in here. I understand that the matte box is a hot item. We have a lot on out plate right now at View Factor. We are working as quickly as we can. We will be putting the beta units of our motion control system out before the end of Oct. The Matte box info should be up on our website in the next few weeks. Curt is currently traveling on company business and will be back in a couple of days. I know he will chime in as well.

Thanks John

The ETAS on your products sound good but what about the Matte-box? Any idea of an ETA?

We will be putting the beta units of our motion control system out before the end of Oct. and you can expect the motors (price TBD by RED) to be out before the end of the year. We will have the motor out no matter what. You will not be dissapointed with the motor. The Matte box info should be up on our website in the next few weeks. Hi John,

The above timeline really helps me focus plans for equipment acquisition. Thank you for the tentative schedule.

Cheers,

Andrew

ETA matte box...when Curt has the time (whos day is always 20 hours long) he will have a better idea of the date when he returns. Sorry but thats all I can mention right now.

I'm going to be in the same boat as you. A friend of mine brought up the subject of a matte box last week whilst shooting. He said Chrosziel was probably the best option for Red with Nikons, but said he'd check up on that and send me some links.

There will be so many red owners dying for a quality - reasonably priced - mattebox. Blair #19 is waiting for one as well, but the clock is ticking. Not all of us can wait too long. Hopefully you guys (Viewfactor) can come through fairly soon.

I agree. We do need a reasonably priced mattebox soon as well.

By the way anyone has any idea when is Redrock releasing theirs?
