  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

matte box for Pro Primes???

Circular polas are also necessary on some 3-chip prism cameras.

Chrosziel 456-R2 Mattebox

Chrosziel 456-R2 Mattebox

Any suggestions for a simple box that will work with the new primes and the 18x85 zoom?

Nothing fancy just something I can flag and drop atleast 2 filters into.

Thanx

Looking at my 300mm Pro and at the Photos Mark posted about his red Primes i think you need a 114mm donut instead 110mm

I have the LMB15 and the Redrock Mattebox, i rarely use the Redrock since the LMB15 is really great, there is a german Company called GECKO CAM the offer a cheap conversion from the standard 2 stage to a 3 stage 4x5,6 LMB-15.

The quality of materials is cheap. The eyebrows fall off. There is a lot of light leak. It feels like it will fall apart after a year of heavy usage.

There's nothing wrong with the Red Rock matte box. I have never had the eyebrow fall off and I haven't noticed any light leak. Neither have any of the people I've rented my Red out to with the RR matte box.

If you don't want to spend the extra $4K you save by buying this matte box on more useful things then by all means get the MB-20. There is a quality difference between the two matte boxes but what do you expect for a $4K difference.

I've seen way too many cracked Chrosziel matteboxes to ever want to go down that road again. I've had to fix my 4x4 a lot of times! :-/

I hear that happens a lot when people run into walls. I've spoken to hundreds of shooters that have cracked their shell housing for one reason or another--but, they all preferred damaging the housing rather than their $$$ lens.

Of course, for every rule, there's an exception.

I have also spoken to several people which have owned Chrosziel matteboxes for 10+ years and continue to use them. And, if for some reason, their mattebox get damaged after all these years, we are here to support them.

I wouldn't expect a mattebox lasting very long if I run into a wall, but I find the most often damage to the Chrosziel are the small cracks that appear around the mounting points of the top- and sideflags. They (used to) just screw a couple of brackets onto either side of the box itself so when you tighten the flags then you put an enourmous amount of strain onto those brackets which in turn will wear the box down and it will crack. I'll take a picture of mine and you'll see for yourself.

We love our RedRock Mattebox. For the price I can buy a new one every 6 months and still make my money back. Everyone who rents it raves on about it. The only complaint is they have yet to make a 6x6!

You are correct--some previous generation matteboxes did not come with pre-mounted mounting blocks. A few years ago, this all changed. All side-wing capable matteboxes now come standard with pre-mounted mounting blocks. The new design should alleviate some of these problems. Moreover, the Chrosziel shell housing is 3.25mm -- making it robust.

If you'd like me to look at your housing and see what I can do, please let me know.

Are these pre-mounted mounting blocks the L-shaped curved pieces wrapping around the corners of the shade? Are they available to retrofit to older matteboxes? If so, how much? Are they available in the UK?

I have an older generation 4x4 model 411-53P which was the DVX100 mattebox, but is actually great with Canon EF lenses on the Red, but it got bashed and now has a hairline crack in the top right corner which opens up a bit when moving the flag or sidewings.

Also have an older 805-02. Same questions. And is it possible to fit the 19mm swingaway arm in place of the 15mm LWS which comes with mine?

Thanks for any information.

Sure, I just have to check on what's in stock. Shoot me an email.

Mike, how different is this than a 450-R2 Box? Would it work on the RPPs?

Mike, how different is this than a 450-R2 Box? Would it work on the RPPs?

The 450-R2 has:
- 110mm Rear Opening
- 1 Rotating Filterstage for 4x5.650/4x4 Filters (Edit: New R2 Rotates)
- 1 Rotating Filterstage for 4x4 Filters
- Must be supported by 15mm mini Rods

The 456-R20 has:
- 130mm Rear Opening
- 2 Independently Rotating Filterstages for 4x5.650/4x4 Filters
- Clamps onto Lens or can be supported by 15mm mini Rods

For the RPPs, I recommend the 456-R20.

Hi Eric,
Yes your 411-53 should be able to accept the new angular block. However,
the mounting holes will be off for side flag locations so if you already have the older side blocks mounted, there will be an offset showing in your housing and will also require you to place new holes for the newer blocks. The other change will be that with the new mouting blocks changing the position of the screw, your snap in mask will no longer work and will need modification or replacment with a newer one. The blocks are part E1637095 and E1638095 for respective left and right. Your other option is to simply replace your entire housing with part 411-50-01 which will include those blocks already mounted considering your housing is already cracked.

In regards to the 19mm arm, your 805-02 should be retrofitable as long as your current 15mm arm mounts by one 5mm socket head screw and two locating pins. The part number is 840-24S.

Since you are in the UK I would recommend contacting Chrosziel directly for these items. Please contact Christiane at christiane@chrosziel.de .

Regards.
