Matte box noob, kinda sorry for a guy named Matt.

Any suggestions for a simple box that will work with the new primes and the 18x85 zoom?

Nothing fancy just something I can flag and drop atleast 2 filters into.

Thanx

The Arri MMB-1 will work great for all of these. There's even some new accessories that allow it to work as a clamp-on for all of these lenses, including the 18-85.

RedRock is a good one to start with. Not really expensive and pretty good all around. It will fit the RPP's and the 18-85. I recommend getting the 5.65x5.65 filter trays too. The RPP's have a 110mm front, which will work for the 4x5.65 "Panavision" filter size, the 4x5.65 filters will also cover the 18-85, but might start to vignette on the wide end if you have 2 or more stacked on there. I haven't had an 18-85 available to me to really test all this. Also since both/all stages can rotate, it's handy to use larger filters for polarizer and grads..

Redrock has also announced a 138mm round filter holder which is unfortunately taking too long to see the light of day; when it finally appears it will be great for 138mm Polas.

What are the major advantages in choosing something like the LMB-5 over the MMB-1? The LMB-5 has no rotatable stages, which it's usually mounted in odd ways to facilitate using polas. Still - the LMB-5 is more expensive.

lighter weight would be my guess....not sure what the MMB-1 weighs, Ive never seen one but the LMB-5 is extremely light

Yeah I forgot to put in an "except being lighter" in that sentence. I know it's very light, which is why steadicam operators prefer it. Just looks kinda silly with it sitting there slightly turned because it doesn't have a built-in rotatable stage. Looks like the MMB-1 is the way to go (for me, that is).

have a RR mattebox and looking for a set of filters.
RR mattebox is pretty flexible (takes 4x4, 4x5.65, 5.65x5.65).
aiming for red pro primes down the line, any issues getting a 5.65x5.65 pola and 4x4 solid NDs & IR to save a bit? or you recommend at least 4X5.65?

There is a gear driven pola frame so now you don't have to rotate that matte-box.

here is a link to some more info on it.

Get 4x5.65. The 4x4 will not cover the RPP's and many wide primes out there. The fronts on the RPP's are 110mm, which is 4.33 inches. 4x4 would be cutting it way too close, IMO.

I'd love to add a small question to this conversation. I am wondering if anyone has tried the Tokina 11-16mm to see if any of the popular MBs clear it at the long end.

Petroff worth looking at

Petroff worth looking at

I think the 5x5 Petroff is the best budget matte box for my money. It's the lightest/strongest matte box I've come across. It works best as a clip on though, the rod adaptor isn't the best. I've used the Red Rock twice and would never touch it again. If you need a studio matte box and money's not an issue then Arri all the way.

Disclaimer: I was given my choice of matte box from Petroff 18 mos ago to test it out with the Red. It worked great as a clip on with Cooke S4s, Master Primes and both Red Zooms and it would fit the RPP just as well.

Clip on

Clip on

One issue to consider is the RPPs are different lengths which diminishes the convenience of a swing away matte box. I am Gregorios' brother and we share the kit including the Petroff matte box. Another thing we discovered is any filter we wanted to rotate (eg a soft grad), which is easy with the Petroff as all stages rotate, the 4 x 5.65 would vingette on anything less than about 22mm on the 18 - 50 red zoom. So the 5x5 is perfect up to 18mm, no vingetting. And we have 4 x 5.65 for non-rotating filters. Can't wait to try it on something wider!

I have the RedRock, which fits 5.65 X 5.65 trays. All my ND and so forth are 4 X 5.65, while my polas are 5.65 X 5.65. No problem with vignetting.

if a polarizer is linear, does it make any difference whether its rotated or not?
You still need to rotate the POLA whether it's linear or circular. A circular POLA just depolarizes the light as it exits the filter. This was necessary for some older video assist systems.
