I need a new matte-box... I would like it to be an ARRI box (rentable) and it needs to have a swing-away function, and it need to fit the lenses i own, and plan to own...

Advices are well appreciated : )

It need to accommodate the Red Pro 18mm on the wide side of things, maybe even the Duclos 11-16mm, if I won't need to compromise (maybe I need a seperate matte-box for the super wide lenses, but I would prefer to be able to use the Red 18mm with my primary matte-box, if I don't have to compromise on size...).

Of coarse, it should also accommodate the longer Red Primes, but I guess this will be no problem...

On the other hand, I already own an 18-85mm lense (it's HUGE), and I guess I'll need 5,65x5,65 filters for polarization, and any other filter that needs to be rotated - to be able to fit the front element of the 18-85mm?

Best regards,
Jon M.

unfortunately does not fit with a 19mm swing away system. the Zacuto arm is just ever so slightly
to big to clear the rods. which is a true bummer.

and using it on 15mm it can only live on the end of the rods. which means as soon
as your lens length changes you need to change rods.

which defies the entire idea of a swing away.

What about something like the O'Connor O-Box with a Zacuto Zwing-Away Bracket?

TLS Raven with Swing away. Arri and Cooke Quality affordable price.

We call that an MB20 II

Thank you, I'm a noob in the world of professional cine-equipment, although I though the MB20 was the choice, it's always a safety factor in getting professional advice from fellow redusers before I prioritize equipment over food, again, thanks... :)

Thanks for the heads-up, axel!

Can I piggy-back a question on this thread?

I'm looking at buying a lightly used CHROSZIEL 450 (I've offered $800 and they accepted, is that a decent price?) or a brand new Shoot35 Cinebox...I've heard good things about both. This will be my first purchased matte box, so can anyone give me some perspective and opinions? I don't see myself doing a lot of run-and-gun handheld, but maybe some. Mostly plan on being on sticks and sliders.

Thanks.

It's a good price, potentially a great price - but check what comes with it. What filter trays size, how many stages, top flag, sidewings, hard mattes, step rings/doughnut to fit your lens. Depending on what your individual needs, adding these accessories can easily add up to a lot extra. Google it, or look at what stores like B&H sell to get an idea of all the potential accessories options.

Can't comment on the Shoot35 Cinebox as I've never used one, although have heard it's a decent mattebox.

Went with the Chrosziel. It's in great shape, and looks like I'll just need to buy a step down ring and maybe a vertical 4x5.5 filter holder. Thanks for your post.

I used to be a big chrosziel fan. but the 450 is a lemon. leaks light like crazy. don't know what they were thinking on that one.
right now by far the best bang for the buck is the O'box. And that thing is bulletproof.

Thanks for the heads up. I have a couple days to test it out before I can't return. I'll check that out for sure.

it feels flimsy. they apparently changed the material to make it lighter - but not
it seems to crack pretty easily.

the worst thing though are the gaps between the filter stages. really quite ridiculous for a company
that used to produce such good stuff ...

Oh woof. Yeah I just checked it out...was hard to notice when I was in-doors today looking at it. I picked it up for a good price, but might have to look at getting something else. Thanks for bringing it to my attention.

Would also love some feedback on the same question... currently tossing up between an MB-20 II and an MB-29. Not much of a price difference (MB-29 is slightly cheaper). Been trying to find opinions on the -29, without much success - anyone here used one?

I'm having a hard time getting those small gaps to effect my image...I have filters in there, shining flashlights down in there, shooting outside, and can't get any sort of noticeable reflection or spill. Still not thrilled with that, but maybe I'll be okay with this one after all.
