so ive started to look at filters for the scarlet, and it's come down to 2 solutions.

1. get a matte box setup with the "plate" filters

or

2. get the threaded filters with no matte box

over time, it would make sense to get the matte box and flat filters, instead of the threaded ones. would the redrock matte box work on the fixed scarlet?

i would love to hear any advice or ideas.

(couldn't seem to find the one posted on here)

I"m curious what size filter it accepts, though, and if it's appropriate for the 2/3" flavors (particularly with the tiny mini-primes), or just the larger-lens scarlet and epics.

here is the matte box i was talking about:

the cost of this with filters would equal the cost of the RED matte box. i assume you would need rails to do use this, or any matte box. i could be wrong.

I've used that one; it was great. Nice how it flips out of the way so you can change lenses. There was something weird where it wouldn't screw down all the way, but I think we hadn't just figured out how to put it together properly (or the rental house was missing a piece/had the wrong piece). You do need rails for it, though. The Red one above doesn't, it just clamps on to the end of the lens. Lighter and more convenient, unless you're planning on switching lenses a lot.

Thanks for the feedback on the RedRock. Since it'll be a fixed, i wont be switching out lenses, but just filters. considering the extra mounts and rails that would be needed, it may be worth it getting the RED matte box. i hope it comes with filter plates and flags.

We don't yet know the focal range of the fixed lens, but it's a pretty safe assumption that the MMB-1 mattebox would cover. The MMB-1 can be rod mounted or clamp on, and has two 4x5.65 trays, the rear one rotating. We have top and side flags for it. That's far more functionality than some scre on filters.

Dean,

It is difficult to see from the renders and pictures, but it appears that the RED matte box will have two top loaded 4X5.65 filter trays and one rotating circular filter tray in the back (4.5-inch?). Someone who attended the RED show and tell might be able to tell you first hand. I am fairly certain that RED would sell the matte box with these standard trays included. You might need to buy additional trays for 4X4 filters.

I bought my Arri MMB-1 matte box from Abel Cine Tech in NYC, and it is great. However, the $1500.00 price tag might be a little higher than you wanted to go.

Its 4X5.65 filter trays load in from the side, and one rotates ... if memory serves. Arriflex has optional 4X4 trays for sale, and there is also a top loading option. It's rear stage can hold a 4.5-inch circular filter (excellent for a polarizer when dialing in the sky) The MMB-1 can clip-on and the side flags and eyebrow are now available. It's very well built.

Good luck to you.

Hold the presses! Just found out about this:

Freaking sweet. Might have to get one. Although, would I really want to carry around a bulb and ballast even when I don't need it? But then, I could always take the bulb and stuff off if I'm just using it as a matte box. Will have to think about it. Anyone have any experience with it?

While the Redrock is apparently fairly good initially, I've heard a lot of people say theirs broke down after about six months of use - things like the threads that the screws on the flags screw into breaking and stuff.

I can highly recommend Arri LMB-5 clip-on (which can be modified to 3-stage, BTW). It is very well made, ultra light and reasonably priced. It will also hold its value much better than Redrock or other "semi" professional products. The LMB-5 also has lots of accessories, such as hard mattes and large selection of reduction rings.

The MMB-1 is also a good choice.
