Hey guys. I've got a music video coming up where we are shooting performance on Epic and storyline stuff a few days later on 5D MkIII.

With the Epic we are using a set of Cooke s4's and an angeniuex 25-250.

Any advice on 5D settings and lens choice to get a similar feel would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

My advice would be : test your 5D, make your own profiles, remap the colors to get close to real colors, fine tune the gamma and do various roundtrip shooting/color correcting. Once you know what your camera is capable of, you will know what you can do to get the most out of it. You will know what to avoid to make it look like shit.

The limitting factor will be more the camera than the lens.

The only way to get a similar feel is to be very conservative on your Epic lighting - because a 5D has such poor latitude and horrible highlight roll-off in video mode. I don't get why a similar feel is even important here - it's totally acceptable for performance bist to look different from the fiction bits in music video convention. I'd try hard tio rent a Scarlet - like really hard - instead of using a 5D. To really match, you will also need to blur your Epic footage, at least a bit, - because the Mark III doe snot resolve 1080p, it just records an actually lower resolution image to a 1080p codec.

You can easily crush the blacks and pop the whites to get the hi contrast look the same as the 5d... but you will have to soften all your EPIC footage by at least 1.5 pixels to get that soft look the 5d does..
It is simple.. its unfortunate though that the 5d will set the look you have to match, not the other way around.

But you will be fine. :)

You could also use the 5D for what it is and not try to make it look something else. You could for exemple not use a huge rig for your 5D and do it handheld (in your hand)...

Make it a + not a -
