I'm Sorry to hear that

Sorry & sad for your loss...

Pleading RED to please figure a way to instal gps in all cameras... Need it now.

Sorry to hear that... i hope it's not becoming a trend in Florida especially with Justin Marx's EPIC-M being stolen too in Miami.

Sorry for your loss. I hope you recover it. I got sick by just reading your thread.

no matter how big or how small the list is, it's pretty disgusting that people actually can get away with such acts. I would really like that camera companies deal with this and try to find a solution. We've been asking for such a thing since long time.
There must be something possible with the sdk excluding camera's serials that are stolen, or is this already the case? but then every software application has to be aware of the stolen serial numbers;
I would always have loved to have a removable dongle, or a pincode you have to enter to get the camera booting up , this would eliminate all possible options for the thiefs , including selling the gear,
so please Red, open this feature to have the option to enter a pin at booting.

What the fuck is going on here in Florida??? That's over a million dollars in a week stolen.. My EPIC was stolen along with a set of super speeds and grip and lighting package..

Your theft sounds organized, that's 1/2 a truck full of gear..

Where was it stolen from? Your shop?

Hey Sven, you might be onto something. It wouldn't be difficult for a camera company to lock cameras that are known to be stolen serial numbers via firmware. At worst, a thief would try to sell a camera that could never be upgraded with firmware. It won't stop theft, but certainly reduce the value that thieves sell the cameras for. Who wants to buy a camera that locks when the firmware is upgraded?

All the other ideas unfortunately have more major drawbacks. A passcode? How would rental houses communicate the passcode to all the camera operators? a dongle? What happens when the camera is stolen along with the dongle?

I'm also in touch with a company that wants to put a tracking device inside the Epic for this exact reason. Large start-up investment needed. also possibility of corrupting the data in SSD with signals. they're working on it.

Yes, making it impossible to update your equipment is a good idea ! It will certainly mean a major devaluation of the equipment and discourage future theft I think.

Find my "Epic" tracking system like apple has for most of their devices! Thieves boot up and boom, location of your gear is broadcast! Lets start a thread requesting this service to RED, camera insurance would go down too I imagine?

Hmm...the lenses will probably be foisted off in the local classifieds or the pawn/camera shops. Call around to the camera places that sell used goods within 50 miles and see if they have any of those lenses in their inventory. Don't tell them you're looking for stolen goods. Just ask for the specific models and then go look for yourself to see if it is your stuff.

An iPhone has it, why not a RED?
Tracking the development of the Epic and Scarlets, last I recall there was a GPS built-in, but they had not developed any lojack-type firmware features. As others have pointed out, the hard part is not getting the camera to know where it is, but tell you where it is. Then again, if there's some sort of 802.11 connection perhaps it could jump on Wifi whenever there's an open network around (and it's on) and broadcast the location out.
