  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

March 2013 Reccomendations for RAID ARRAY editing R3D footage in CS6

Incorrect.

Resolve does not use GPU to transcode R3D files. It uses CPU (words from a conversation with the guys over at BM). The bottleneck is still the debayer of R3D clips.

On a 2009 8-core Mac Pro tower, 48GB Ram with a new GTX 680, a 48 second clip shot at 5k HD takes 15 minutes 53 seconds to transcode to Avid DnXHD175X.

A Mac Book Pro can do it in 11 minutes 58 seconds.

Where are you getting the the results on a Quadro 4000 or GTX 680 at "half real time?"

See that little gear icon in the bottom left corner of the Resolve UI - click on it

Go to the Camera Raw settings - drop down menu for Red in upper right corner

Change Decode Quality to "Half Res Good"

Enjoy

bit depth 10?

Yes

By the way, you'll kill your laptop transcoding with it, it doesn't have enough cooling ability

It's the DITs. His MBPr is kicking my fully loaded Mac Pros butt here on set :)

I'm still getting around 16 minutes per minute of transcoded footage. I talked with the guys at Black Magic Design, wish I could speed up this Mac Pro, better late than never.

Slow drives? GTX 680 connected to both power supply cables?

2:1 transcode ratio I'm getting varies by camera aspect and compression ratio, and by output codec

Just tested Avid 175 10 bit, it actually goes a little faster than ProRes 422

Westmeres are faster than Nehalems as well, but not that much faster

how fast are your drives? MB/s?

2 sets of internal raids right now, which get 350 MB/s each

Usually transcode from the copy of the raws on the Raid

Just finished a batch of 10 minutes and 52 seconds of footage in 63 minutes 14 sections.

6:1 ratio, but much better than 16:1.

This is on my internal Raid 0 300-400MB/s. Still not sure how you can getting 2:1.

not sure if you are still looking for external storage but my vote definittely goes to pegasus....and thunderbolt is a relevation after years of having to deal with everything else...just works...and so fast...
i get 600+mb r/w with the pegasus R12....getting another one soon....
i also have a lacie littlebig mirrored ssd array and the pegasus is faster for large data....

600MB/s + very nice!

Up to date on CUDA drivers? Check your CUDA control panel in Sys Prefs

Other than that, it might be because of your older Mac - Westmeres are 64-bit native

syntax is confusing... is that 600 Mbit/s or 600 MByte/s ?

Thanks.

in raid 5....so that makes the r12 a 10TB storage...does not have any other connections other then thunderbolt....but in reality nothing can sustain those read/write speeds anyway....
i have recommended the pegasus to several other people as well and they all love it....no problems so far...
i do of course also have online back up....just saying...no matter how great, it is not a question if but when a hard drive will fail...and rebuilding a raid 5 is a little nerve wrecking if you don't have a back up....

Paul,

do u have a link to the R12 ?

I can only find the R6 on the Pegasus page...

Did you by any chance do speed tests with eSATA, USB 3.0 or SATA III ?

Thanks.

- M

well, it appears the SATA III icon on their site prob refers to the supported HD's... the comparison chart they list is just for plain illustration and not for actual speeds measured with the R6 and different connectors... it appears the R6 comes with TB only, so not usable on a native Win machine...

I assume you meant to say the R6 with 6x2TB (12TB) effectively turns into 10TB with a Raid 5 ?

i believe the R6 is 6x1TB and the R12 6x2TB...they also have a 6x3?4?TB box now.....regardless, yes the 6x2 in raid 5 is 10TB of available storage...and yes, like i said, there are no other connections, only thunderbolt....which makes sense to me because neither USB3 nor esata are fast enough for what the box can deliver...and so yes, i guess no windows (but i wouldn't know)

I think they only have the R6, there is no R12 model (at least I cannot find it)...

the R6 has 6 bays and u can feed it any HD size u like up to 4TB per drive, at least that is what Promise says... users have reported that everything above 12TB (6x2TB) is an issue and will cause problems... maybe they fixed that with a fw upgrade...

glad you got that blazing fast speed and yes, backups are in order, lots of peeps have reported HD's randomly failing with these units...

Thanks !

sorry, yes, you are right....they have the 12TB R6 (which i have and thought of as R12)...
they do not sell the boxes empty, i believe they have some special HD tweak to get those crazy speeds....so maybe there was an issue with the larger ones....
regardless, i have one and i know 4 other people who bought them on my recommendation and none have had any problems...like i said, i will have to get more storage pretty soon and i will definitely get another one....
but pegasus were really the first ones to the thunderbolt party, i am sure there are other, great solutions out there now....and regardless, the speeds are crazy...i really don't think i would notice a difference between 500mb and 600mb r/w....
so i guess my point is i love thunderbolt...it is the most solid connection i have ever had (i have had more issues with usb!)....i run everything from ethernet to monitor to fw800 over it....no issues, no problems, just plug and play...just works...superfast....crazy fast....

so when buying SSDs for a Raid 0. What should I be looking for?
