  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Manure

I am learning more here than many other books I have read!

HMI Source Four

HMI Source Four

"Then there was an interrogation scene, again lit with the overhead fluorescent fixtures and a backlight through the window from the HMI Source-4"

Do you mean a joker bug? a a 400 joker through with a source 4 body?

I've seen this thing in several photos, on film and RED cameras what is it.

Thats what I thought it might be for, but its not on the focal plane Its attached where the matte box and lens meet. ?

It doesnt need to be at the focal plane. It can be placed anywhere. The display unit makes an adjustment for the distance it is off the film plane. The typical way to set it up is to put an object at say 3', and adjust the readout to match. It will then consistently add that adjustment to the readout automatically.

David,

I just finished reading this thread (took a while!) and wanted to just say thanks for sharing. I've 1stAC'd three RED features in the last year and I learned a whole lot just reading this.

Conrad and James, thanks for chiming in as well!

So I'm taking a small course at a new studio thats opening up, and when talking about HMI balloons, he pulled up a picture of BTS of manure... did you use HMI balloons on it?

Yes. The ceiling was so big that we had to use a hodge-podge of techniques because we didn't have the budget to light it one way. I think we ended up with 30 Kino Blanket lights up there and some HMI balloons around the perimeters to sort of act as cyc lights. It worked fairly well because when I turned off some Kino Blanket lights, the balloons became brighter in comparison so I got sort of a soft backlight effect as if the sky was brighter in the background instead of the foreground. Plus the balloons had both HMI and tungsten globes in them so I could warm up the sky cyc by switching to the tungsten globes (the RED camera was set to daylight-balance.)
