  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Manufacturing Redefined...

what a fantastic insight. truly awesome!

RED Service Centre

I think you should buy the best camera you can... then smile when you realize that for the 1st time in 100 years, the best camera you can buy is made in the USA.

Red team has been a scene changer in the camera market...But as I have mentioned earlier also we need a service centre in Asia because I feel India will be one of the biggest market for RED PRODUCTS in next one year..(This I am telling because our EPIC was tested by two on the biggest film production house in MUMBAI and we have very positive feedback. The DP were awestruck with the quality of images that were coming out from the beast called EPIC)

I know nobody cares and it doesn't matter. It probably wasn't the best one in it's day, either, but I thought the original Mitchell "Mickey Mouse" was made in the U.S. in the 20s and 30s, which is almost 100 years ago.
Jim might know. He probably has one on a shelf somewhere.
I saw one years ago and it looked heavier than 100 Epics. My guess is it didn't have HDR or a wireless remote.

The tour is a great idea. But then you'll have to have the lock-in seats like they did in Jurassic Park, or else all the cinematographers are going to want to touch the baby Epic's.

LOL

Better make that lock more solid than in Jurassic Park!

This is an amazing sight...if ever I imagined a "Dream Factory" this is it. Congrats to Jim and the entire team at RED for giving us a peek.
BTW is the RED typeface very similar to the Hummer typeface?

I don't understand the very "American" marketing of RED. Neither do I think the Epic is the one and only way to digital cinematography.

But as an engineer with a production background I highly respect Mr. Jannards change of mindset - from a brand with no interest in production at all (using subcontractors in low-wage countries, rebranding Sigma-lenses...) to a company that brings manufacturing work back to the US. I've heard the arguments for offshoring work a million times and I know how tempting it is to leave any serious investment into manufacturing aside, relying purely on subcontractors like Foxconn which seem to offer anything - you don't even have to care about environmental, social and technological sustainability anymore...

Well, modern production is anything but "stupid", it's complex and needs skilled workers with a long-term motivation. No "trained apes", easily replaceable and cheap sitting at the workbench 12h a day, doiing the same movements again and again...
Many German companies tried (or still try) to offshore work to lower standards, no more extensive theoretical training (up to 42 months for a craftsman, additional training for "Techniker" and "Meister") in specific crafts (machining, electronics, surface technologies...) no social responsibility, no strict environmental regulations and paying wages about 2x (American south), 5x (Eastern Europe) or even 10/20x lower (China, Vietnam, Thailand...) than in their home country. And then? They fail and they don't even realize why.

It's a long way from a few minutes assembly work to highly-trained craftsmen doing actual manufacturing. But it's a start, reinvest into the team, train them, treat them properly and you will gain more than any company buying their products from Foxconn for a few $ could ever imagine!

I love the innovation that Red brought to the table and took on the fight with the "big" guys, its like the brave kid who took on the bully and made him look bad. Go Red!

Makes me want to order a Scarlet, and I don't even need one. But I think it's really cool to see inside the gust and the assembly process. Really like seeing the manufacturing side of things, pretty cool. EDIT : I guess that's really assembly, but enjoy seeing these images of the process.
