  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Manhattan LCD

I have an earlier, slightly larger Manhattan. It's a decent picture for the price, but the menus are partly cut off on mine.

do you use it for focus or more for framing and exposure settings? i ask because i noticed the newer manhattan monitor has hdmi but doesn't have native 720p resolution.

For me it really works as a cheap field monitor, for times when there's no separate video village. I think it's about a ten-inch diagonal, so it's too big to do much good mounted on the camera. I judge picture from the EVF, and have rented the Red LCD when I wanted a camera-mounted monitor.

ManhattanLCD 089B Review

ManhattanLCD 089B Review

I bought the Manhattan LCD Model 89B about a month ago and for the price, I'm pretty happy with it.

The build quality of the LCD is very good, not a metal case, it's plastic, but quite thick and looks like it can take a knock or two. It is very lightweight and I think the image looks great: very bright and contrasty (which I like) and color looks rich and true--even with the default image settings (it does have menu functions that allow you to adjust color, brightness and a few other parameters). I found the viewing angle to be quite wide. It offers 1:1 magnification, however it only enlarges the upper left side of the screen. It does not offer a "blue gun" mode to calibrate the monitor to bars, so you'll have to use a gel to eyeball it. No HD-SDI on the 89B. I've been using HDMI, but it also offers component, composite and VGA inputs).

If I have to nitpick, the things I find bothersome are the wiggly feel of the menu buttons (I'd like them to feel more solid under my finger) and more importantly, I find it very confusing to navigate through the menus using the buttons. Maybe with practice, I'll get the logic of how they work with the menu navigation, but right now, it's pretty frustrating.

However, my biggest problem is the LCD only displays some, but not all, of the camera menu information (see attached photos below). I kind of expected this with the 1024x600 resolution of the 89B. At some point, Manhattan is supposed to come out with an 89C version of the monitor with an improved vertical resolution (1280 x 768--which will match the resolution of the Carrion and smallHD monitors, so in theory the 89C will supposedly show the entire cam menu, but we'll have to wait and see). It was not a disaster however, I can still see the main image and the look around area surrounding it, the red recording icon and timecode/file info, and it looks great (but of course it would be much better to also see the image data like ISO, Frame Rate, Audio Levels and Histogram). So it may make a better director's monitor than a camera operator's. For me, I think this would be a perfect monitor if it just showed the full menu (I like the image, weight and size).

Even with those drawbacks, I think the 89B has been an asset to us on our shoots. It makes a real difference having a nice, big, bright screen to look at for framing and focusing, and sure beats squinting at the tiny RED LCD screen. And, I think it does a great job for $599 (add $150 for the LiIon battery pack).

Hope this has been helpful. If anyone has any questions, let me know.

Check out the photos below. The RED and Manhattan LCDs are obviously NOT calibrated, but I did try to match the viewing angle the best I could (took these right after I opened the box). They'll give you an pretty good idea how bright and viewable the 89B is with factory settings.

Cheers,

hey guys Vinny here from manhattan lcd. glad to see some of you using our production monitor. i noticed that RED makes a 1024 x 600 lcd they call it the RED-LCD they also make a RED-EVF: 1280 x 848 resolution. From what i understand from the manual you can get the menus to show up correctly on our 8.9 inch monitors you just need to change some settings.

I do not have access to a RED Camera so i can only go by what i have found in the user manual. It would be helpful if someone can try these settings and see if the menu's display correctly, then post your findings in this thread.

Copied directly from page 14 of the user guide
in the manual it says that both can show the progressive video display with Surround View, frame guides and safe action / title overlays, zebra and false color exposure overlays, waveforms, camera status and operation menus.

p. 52 in the above manual.
To select between 720p and 848p output options, select VIDEO (720p) or MENUS (DVI). The default is VIDEO (720p) The Preview output setting will be held in camera memory.
