  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Malick's THIN RED LINE Bluray - Wow

Tonight was the first time I've watched Thin Red Line start to finish in years. Blu-Ray and masterful grading make this a brand new experience. If you have a stellar 5.1 setup, you're in for one hell of treat. There are elements I never notice before.

Keep an eye and ear open when towards the beginning when their riding the U-Boats to shore. There's a really cool, eerie rattling noise that sounds something like an old lawn mower. A familiar sound you'd never notice otherwise, but going to war in a creeky U-Boat makes it hyper real and damn scary. This movie is masterpiece. Best of the 90's.

Joe, I have been waiting about 2 or 3 years now to rewatch it. I decided back then that I would hold out for the Bluray, not even knowing for sure when or if that might happen. I am now incredibly excited to see this. I think I will order a little sound system before watching it.

To call this film a masterpiece is of course an understatement. Not many people pay enough attention to realize what an overwhelming genius Terry really is. It is not possible to compare any other living director to him. That would be like trying to compare the Back Street Boys to Beethoven. You have to go back to the likes Kubrick, Kurosawa, Hitch, etc, before you can even find a director worthy of being called a "peer" to Malick.

I think "Tree of Life" is going to shock people. Get ready for an even more dramatic move in cinematic language.

Hey Tom, Like you, waiting for a new edition is the reason I haven't revisited TRL start to finish for some 5 years. I cannot believe it's taken a decade, but I'm so happy that is was put in Criterion's hands. One you get use to the incredible picture, you'll be marveling at the juiced up sound design. There are so many great things I've never noticed. The squeak of a bamboo stalk that falls into picture and the deep percussion of the distant bombs. This has been a great experience.

As for the Special Features: There are 6 or so out takes that are so so, but the one that I never saw coming was the with Mickey Rourke who gives balls out, no bullshit, heart breaking performance as a company sniper. Wow. Why this scene was cut is mystery

I can't wait to screen this again. It's been 4 years since my last viewing. Glad I held out, since I'll be able to pump that lossless soundtrack through an 18,000 watt (8,000 in subs alone) 7.4 sound system flat to 10Hz to follow Terry's advice and "play it loud"! :lurk5:
