  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Question for those editing RED footage out there--

Does anyone know of a way to make NEW r3d files from an existing one?
Say I have a long clip of something but I need to give PART of the clip to a client but it has to be r3d, not a QT proxy. Is this possible?

This Tool will allow you to make large files into smaller pieces for transfer. You can then rebuild the chunks into the original larger file.

Features:
It will allow you to select the chunk size.
Files are quickly rebuilt.

Works for me.
 
Those type of programs are generally used to split files for CD's, or torrent uploads so people can download them in small chunks and reassemble them afterwords.

I think what they are looking for is something that will clip from 1:33 to 1:45 from a 4 minute clip and create a usable R3D.

I definately see how this would be useful, but I don't know of anything that does it yet.

I'm sure some of the guys from the stock footage community are either working on this or have a solution--maybe they can chime in.

I think Elyse is after "trimming" the R3D and sending only a small part of it - not the whole file broken into small pieces. I have asked this to Brent number of times and we hope some newer version of the SDK will allow us to create such a tool. I would kill for one like that...

you could always use the final cut plugin; do your in&out and conform r3d to a new file, while maintaining the raw format.
 
I've noticed a partial R3D file will still load, so if the clip you want is at the beginning of the original R3D file, you just need to truncate the file up until the desired cutting point to make a shorter version.

This is exactly what you can do with the program I posted... you cannot precisely pick the in and out points but you can break the file up into smaller R3D's and send just that part of the file.

Just rename the file it makes to the .R3D extension and it works. It works takes 2 seconds and is quicker than any other method posted here.

For PC only, was not mentioned in original post what OS was being used.

I just tried splitting a 543MB R3D into 120M sections with the mac program Split & Concat. The split worked fine but the 120MB R3D won't open in Red Alert, FCP or Color. Anyone have any suggestions or different methods? This would be really useful.
 
Thanks, but I need something that will let me choose in and out points instead of just splitting it into chunks.

I have actually thougt about making such a tool. I've looked at the R3D container and think it should be fairly simple to split it up into smaller pieces.

If the tool doesn't exist yet I would perhaps look into it :)

It existed for about 48 hours. Now it doesn't. As a result of the previous tool I would say it's substantially more difficult to develop one now.

Red didn't take kindly to it.... and also promised to release an officially sanctioned tool shortly. Still waiting.

? I don't understand. Someone made the tool and RED put out a DMCA?

Anyway I'm almost done now. Think I just need to make the last 4 ending packets. The first version will just be in form of a python script. Will see how it behaves performance wise and perhaps make a c version later.
