So I was going to bed last night pondering on all the talk I've read about how awful it would be if Scarlet was released with built in lens. I too, share some of that sentiment wanting to be able to use my Nikon lenses or whatnot, but I can't talk bad about Scarlet because it's (nearly) everything I've ever wanted in a camera.

My theory about Red's reasoning behind Scarlet is that they want a camera that is ready to go out of the box. No lenses to buy, if you don't want any accessories, you don't have to buy any, a real industry killer.

Why can't you do both?

My suggestion is (and I don't know how feasible this would be) how about we make the 'built in' lens a modular unit, so it 'mounts' onto the camera. And then have optional Nikon or Canon lens adapters that could mount in the stock lens' place? This way, if you want to use Scarlet out of the box, you can. And if you want to buy a $50-100 lens mount to use your own optics, you can too. It's a win-win.

Anyway, my $0.02. I'd still like to see external lens support in Scarlet, but I trust Jim and the rest of you guys at RED. You rock!

So far RED is sticking with the fixed lens they say. But we will all know for sure in about a year or so. A long time to be thinking about it, isn't it?

I think what you will see if the camera has a fixed lens is someone doing what Sanjin is having done to his camera. That is a new front end (sometimes called a standard or snoot) made for it. I know for a fact that camera/optical techs love to tear shit apart. This might disable the lens that comes with the camera if it incorperates power zoom or auto iris type functions. For sure it'll make your warrenty disappear.

new president

By then we will have a new president.

hmm...

has anyone approached Obama and/or Clinton to weigh in on the fixed lens debate?
:umm:

and McCain? where's he stand on this important issue?

For $3K of course it has a fixed lens. To ask for anything otherwise on a camera in this price range isn't realistic.

I'm sure all of our wonderful candidates will wholeheartedly side with the majority... no matter which side of the great lens debate that is.

Oh, and the following week, when giving a speech to the opposite side, they would promptly contradict themselves to thunderous applause and absolutely no repercussions.

Why do we continue to vote for these people? They're all essentially the same, save one or two issues like abortion or gay marriage. They all steer the country in roughly the same direction give or take whichever social issue pushes your buttons and gets them elected.

I still can't believe people are actually asking for canon or nikon mounts. Don't you understand a 28mm lens would act as a telephoto with a 2/3" sensor? If you want to ask for interchangeable lenses the best option is a C-Mount. There're lots of cheap and high quality 16mm, S16mm and machine vision primes and zooms out there.

Anyway I trust Red. I know they're going to mount a very high quality glass in front of the Scarlet. I don't see the point for interchangeable lenses, let alone a canon/nikon mount.

That is why Red will stick with the fixed lens. I am sure is going to be a great one too.

People, you're scaring me. It's the same out here.

Isn't it possible to allign the mount so that the image doesn't get cropped with a still 35mm lens?

Like with EF-S lenses on 1.6 crop cameras. They are alligned based on distance so that a 15mm lens is 15mm and nothing else. Should be possible to allign the mount instead of the lens.

But I'm fine with a fixed lens as long as it has a good wide range.
A good wide image is often the difference between consumer zoom compared to a professional one. Scarlet is a professional camera so I'm really hoping for a wide range that looks good.

Glazarus, check out the picture below from Brook Willard's Red One FAQ. The whole image represents the image created by a particular focal length lens. Lets say 85mm. When you put that lens on a 35mm camera, you get the whole image. When you put it on a 16mm camera, you only get the small image in the center, which makes the lens much more telephoto. This is characteristic of the focal length. The mount can't change that.

You may recall that typical standard 35mm still zoom lenses were something like 28-70mm. On DSLRs, something like 18-55mm is more common because they only capture the center of the 28mm, which makes it not very wide anymore.

Have you ever used a EF-S lens? 18mm is 18mm, because the rear end of the lens is further into the camera to adjust the image because of the smaller sensor. It was created so that superwides could be used on DSLR's.
As I see it, if the mount is closer to the sensor it should make the crop less then it is. Maybe not entirely but it could get down to 1.6 at least.

That's right, definitely.
However, unless the lense was especially designed for that task (and most cine lenses people would like to mount aren't), mounting it closer to the sensor would completely mess up focus - with changed distances and no achievable infinity focus. So: NOT good, although I do realise that the orginal purpose (making the field of view of the lense fit the sensor) would be fulfilled.
