Almost revolutionary!!!

Absolutely fantastic 3D movies on budget!!!

You get 2x7D cameras, one custom made mount and then ready to go 3D.

Swedish small company:

"Syndicate proudly presents thier DUO7D3D Stereoscopic camera solution:

_MG_9602.jpg

The first sterioscopic Syndicate rig, DUO7D3D.

A ready to rumble solution for 3D cinematic imagery
The dual 7D head is now calibrated and delivers footage that is very keen on the eyes.
Again the small sized cameras and the low noise / high ISO is a solution ideal for Stereoscopic films.
This is the first out of two 3D rigs syndicate will start to produce.
It covers the above 120 mm in between eyes distance.
Then next step is a mirror solution covering 0-120 mm eye distance.
The clips bellow are all post rendered to be viewed with the old school cyan/red kind of 3D glasses.
The two streams can off-course be rendered in any shape for any kind of dual projection
i.e polarized or one screen per eye etc.

Down scaled single frame DUO7D3D source footage.

Ignore the bad Stockholm / November weather and lightning conditions.
The files bellow are downscaled and compressed quicktimes files,
off-course the full 1920x1080 resolution is providing a better result.

are they sync'd?

how?

Also rolling shutter jello effect is another issue for 3D work.....

Even more so with one camera upside down in relation to the other, meaning the sensor is scanning the opposite direction and from bottom to top in relation to the other. I also don't see a need to flip one camera this way. It would make more sense to choose appropriate lenses and framing to space the interocular distance so that the cameras don't have to be mounted this way. Should be possible, the 7D isn't that big. I've shot lots of 3D stills with two Nikon SLRs (D2Xs) which are larger.

Sanjin, this is only good for "advanced touristic 3D" though, right?

fascinating.
a rig like this could be made with about a foot and a half of 2x4 and some screws. serious DIY 3-D.

I'm digging it.

the big problem with designing a 3-D shooting rig is that the camera body (and sometimes even the lenses) gets in the way of short interocular settings.

the reason interocular is important: if the interocular is too wide, the shot takes on the appearance of a tiny scale model, if it is too narrow, everything appears much larger. Convergance (toe in) can be done in post, but you give up some pixels at the sides, and any barrel distortions might show up as vertical mis-registration.

Of course this is the 3-D assistant's job, but with most side by side rigs its impossible to get 2-inch (normal) setting.

No mention here yet (?) of single camera solutions by either lens array for single chip camera or dual chip designs. There are plenty of pixels in the chip for a nice 2k image.

It might be less expensive to mount a small consumer camera alongside the RED lens, then let software reconstruct both views in post. I have mentioned this as a route to high speed. Sony makes a very slim camera, the HDR-TGseries camcorder, which would fill the bill nicely it even has high frame rate mode.

Horizontal camera motion also provides depth information. If a trolly shot is available, pulfrich effects (dimming one eye) or simply repositioning copy of the original on the timeline. The interocular in this case would be related to the speed of the dolly or the time delay of the shifted frames.

Tom L,

definitely.

I just entered "backpack cinematography" and "advanced touristic" movie making with 7D but still not at 3D,

at the moment reading one book about it (3D Movie Making by Bernard Mendiburu) .

The latest I've got Glidecam 4000 Pro and learning to use it.

Also have an idea to combine RED1, Glidecam 4000 Pro with EasyRig 3 Cine and see how it is working.

7D with Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8 on Glidecam 4000 Pro.

the funnier is yet to come when you begin to call us w/ the initial included.. see you in vienna one of these days

Has anyone given one of these gizmos a go for video?

Obviously the optics here are not not great, but it's an interesting proof of concept: with the right combination of anamorphic lenses you could get two usable nearly-720p frames out of a single 7D.

ET told me they are working on a 3d rig for the 7D...Could be neat, but the 7D would need more control: Genlock comes to mind.
