Actually, Kurosawa's suicide attempt was in 1971 after the critical failure of "Dodesukaden"; he eventually made "Dersu Uzala" (1975).
And you forgot one of his greatest films after "Kagemusha", which was "Ran". He also made "Rhapsody in August" after "Dreams".
Off-topic, but this is an interesting bit of trivia from Wikipedia regarding Kurosawa:
Ah, yea. My memory slipped on Ran, placed it before Kagemusha in error. Yes, one of the all time finest films. (That red, yellow, blue color scheme would have been mind blowing on an Epic). But fading viability after a string of financial misfires were absolutely a factor in his suicide attempt, he viewed his career as over. It took Lucas and Spielberg to get him on his feet. Both his book Something Like an Autobiography and the Donald Ritchie book Japanese Film are awesome reads for the Kurosawa fanatic in us all.
So he was certainly a master til the end, but again, he remains one of the rare, rare exceptions, not the rule.
