Hey fellow REDizens, we just released a new viral video clip showcasing Ken Block's new 2011 Ford Fiesta that he's competing with here in North America this year. I directed the spot along with my Mad Media crew: DP Milan Spasic , AD/Editor Ryan Holdridge, and 1st AC Eric Everly. We shot and cut the piece in two days at FPI Studios in Auburn Hills, Mi alongside still photographer Tony Harmer.

We shot with fast primes on a Camtram dolly set-up, which is a bit small for a fully outfitted RED, but portable and easy to travel with. Tony Harmer designed the lighting set-up for his still shots and we adapted to match his look. Kudos to him for going with hot lights.

The post production workflow included processing with the RED Rocket™ card, a trip through RED’s Cine X software, and editing with Final Cut 7. The only real effect we used was the "Bad TV" filter from FCP, which is surprisingly fun to work with. Comments and suggestions are welcome.

Yeah it was Ethan. There are a few shots that probably warranted some power windows in Color, for example, but we were short on time - and were able to match the look of Tony's stills perfectly right out of Cine X. He shot Medium format on a digital Hasselblad. Funny thing is - when we showed him the RAW 4K .tif's he threw his hands up and started laughing. He got "it" right away. I really believe Scarlet is THE next evolutionary step for still shooters who want to move forward with a more robust tool set. Of coarse the Red Rocket card was really key to our workflow.

Yeah the Go Pro's are pretty cool. Those are on the roof and side of the car. The mounts are junk, (we use Manfrotto's) the image is a bit wavy at times, and there is no way to preview the image - but at $200 you can't beat 'em. We've tried everything - and I mean everything. Inside front view and facing the drivers view are Sony HXR-MC1 - which have a much cleaner look obviously. They just tend to overheat in pelican cases. And because they have a zoom lens (floating sensor) they will go to black and/or loose focus during an abrupt impact - like say a crash... We think the combination of the Convergent Design Nano Flash and Iconix (prime) cameras are the way to go - but that's nearly $20K for a single set-up. Ouch.
