  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Mad Dash for Scarlet

An answer that will be answered by the release of the DSMC.

One thing...the the sensor will be a whopping 33% larger in size which translates to a 1/6" larger than the EX1's sensor...

Actually, Scarlet's sensor is double the size.

EX1: 6.97 x 3.92 = 27 mm2
Scarlet 2/3": 10.1 x 5.35 = 54 mm2

I suppose you were just considering the diagonal, but of course, the sensor is 2 dimensional, so we should be considering the area for size.

On top of this, there's no doubt the M-X technology is far superior to the aging EX1's sensors in terms of sensitivity, noise, latitude, and well, every aspect really. The only thing is that EX1 has three, so I am not as sure about colour accuracy, but I guess we will find out.

I have no doubt the Scarlet will produce a better image quality even downscaled to 1080p.

I wasn't taking consideration of the actual size, as I suppose I should. I was just taking the 2/3" sensor vs. 1/2" sensor specs.

I for one, don't have any doubts on which one will yield better results... ;)

hmm

I don't know right now whether I'll be able to order what I want right when they go on sale. I know that I want a fixed lens scarlet for sure, and ideally I would like to get an S35 Scarlet, something I could use for indie features, but it's not really necessary and I wouldn't do that unless my first feature does well so that I know I'll probably be doing another in short order and another after that, etc.

I'm only positive about wanting the fixed lens scarlet because its price is very justifiable and it would be nice for us to switch from using HVX200s, but if business is too slow then I'd rather just run the HVX200s into the ground rather than spend my tiny profits on a new camera right now. Which makes me sad, because I want the Scarlet bad. I guess I could ask my dad if he'd spring for one for x-mas ha-ha ;)

This is why I just sold my Sony EX1 for $4970 on Ebay. After I shot the Red Carpet at the Academy Awards I put the EX1 on ebay, and sold for whatever I could get for it. The money is sitting in a savings account which will contribute to a Scarlet 2/3" Interchangeable Kit. I am excited to shoot with the Scarlet for next years Oscars...The Academy loves dramatic slow motion, so the 150fps is going to be a dream.

I am rubbing my hands together, index poised on the mouse and as soon as I see a pre order or order button, Im going to click it to death (for S35), thats when Im not busy with my trusty ol HPX500.

Ive been ready since the announcement.

Funds in hand (in the bank) The good thing about the long wait is it gave many here plenty of time to save up for their choice of RED camera. To have this quality product at the price point RED is giving us is a dream come true for me. Back in the early 90's I paid $6,000 for two 9 Gig HDs, now we are getting a real professional quality "SUPER" camera system for less than those old drives cost. Incredible that anyone would complain that the fixed is too much. Right now I'm still working on what kind of computer to get as I'm still running on G5 Towers at home but I'm worried that as soon as I buy one Apple will come out with a newer model with bigger drives and more ram for the same price... just like the last time! What is great about this site is all the help the members give each other. Reading the REDUSER postings has helped me narrow my choice for a workstation. Many thanks!

Boy, do I hear you on this! I recall, around 1988, buying a 10 MB (that's MEGabyte, NOT GIGabyte) external hard drive for my Mac II and paying around $1400. The Mac II itself was, if I recall, about $5K. "The good ole' days," eh?

Also, like you, although I have an Intel MacBook Pro, I do most of my editing on a G5 and am waiting for the new Mac Pro. It has been more than a year since they last revved it and I am pretty sure the new one is very close. Personally, I'd advise a little more patience. I am pretty sure it will be here before Scarlet and I'd guess the new tower will be great for the R3D workflow.

Not only that..it prevented some of us from rushing into productions
with scripts that were..second thought...umm.. not ready for prime time.

I am pretty sure i read Jim stating that current R1 owners will get first 'slay' at the Scarlets when released. It's all part of rewarding early adopters. It's a great thing if you are one of them (i am:) and rightly so. The Epic rollout is also to reward people and rightly so there as well. This kind of business practice is missing everywhere in society and it makes one loyal and happy to part of all of this. It was hard and painstaking in the early days after people handed over large sums of cash and this is his 'thanks' in a manner of speaking. It's in no way to penalise anyone if they were not invloved from the outset but just to say 'thanks'. But he has also stated that there will be large resources of cameras available when they are released and so it will not happen as it did with the R1 extended rollout. And considering the lengthy delay in getting the ASIC rolling, you can imagine they have been producing large quantities of modules etc in the meantime. I wouldn't worry too much if i were you but i would imagine it would be at least a couple of months (at least) after they are released before orders are filled off the shelf. You have to remember that even if the stock is there, they are very restricted in only getting the cameras out of one office or maybe two. Where as companies with world wide distributors will have stock flowing in potentially hundreds of outlets. It will just take time to pack and post:)

I have also read somewhere if memory serves, that not all accessories will be available from the get go but considering that was a while ago before these 'brain' delays, that may have changed. So it may be better being a little back from the head of the pack and gear will be available at once. A lot of people including myself were caught for months without drives, EVF's, components in production packs etc. There were a lot of vital missing parts at the beginning which made life very difficult to get the camera working and this is all part of it as well.

Id be more afraid that RED is struggling to deliver the camera with the advertised features at the price point that was promised. Whats more, SONY, Pana, CANON, JVC all have many years of experience at mass production as well as service and support. I have a feeling they (the competition) are more skeptical then afraid at this point. As for me I WOULD LOVE to get my hands on a Scarlet as advertised. For now.... it just wait and see.

Hmmm.. it seems that maybe someone hasn't been paying attention to what's going on in this forum... maybe?

As a pretty new indie film maker myself, i think that anyone in the same sitiuation as myself, ie. bottom of the pecking order, saying that they are unconcerned about getting their Scarlet on time is being foolish. Red is being admirable and remarkably unique in actually respecting their senior users, unlike almost any other service in the world you wish to name, and hence those breaking into film that want to do it the Red way are probably in trouble, particuarly if they have deadlines to fill.

Well stated Chris.

The way it is RIGHT NOW, I just bought a T2i, with part of the money I had set aside for scarlet. This makes me sad, but I have projects right now. So I am thinking that I will buy scarlet, whenever it may come out (and this means AVAILABLE, IN HAND, TO NON-RED ONE OWNERS) unless someone else actually competes. Then we will see.

Its crazy fine that things take awhile, I just want a date that open orders will start. Not rolling email blasts with 30 days to respond, and then 2 weeks for delivery. The final date, bottom of totem pole, order, get it 3 days later. Until then, make due with other things.

So sad, but it is what it is.

Jeff

There will be many Scarlets available when it is finally released. There may be a delay if the warehouse drains completely between container-loads, but I think the model Red's using is to put Scarlet into the hands of many on day one. But we're still talking about a $5K purchase, so I think a reasonable manufacturing target to shoot for is between 2,000 to 4,000 cameras per month throughput to start. JMSAO*

*Just My Sorry-Ass Opinion.

Jarred mentioned they are gearing up for up to 7000 cameras a month. I'm sure they will scale production to demand.
