  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Mad Dash for Scarlet

The early adopters are a huge part of building and supporting this company, I'm all for them being rewarded for that. If it wasn't for them there wouldn't be a scarlet (I think? who knows with Jim and the team...who cares we don't need customers!....not likely though).

sorry been a late one, I say just relax and enjoy life, don't sweat the small details and focus on the important ones.

I don't see the logic in renting a $5000 camera that you would buy 10 for every Red One you own. Red One rental made a lot of sense, but any serious indie film-maker who has rented a Red or thinking of a scarlet will be able to pony up $5k for a complete camera (fixed lens) and use it for all there productions for the next 4 years, looking at similarly priced cameras (Sony HVR-Z7U HDV Camcorder) at my local camera store, the price per day is $300, for a week its $900. Given I'll use this camera more than 5 weeks in a year, I'd buy it, wouldn't you?

So I think there will be a huge demand for the scarlet. But it will be overwhelmingly from the indie filmmakers who used to rent Red ones or similar, and not the rental companies who rented them the Red ones.

Adorama in NYC have ten canon 7D's which they rent out all the time and thats only a $1700 camera. Its a good business renting out equipment.

Is anyone else scared that upon word of a release date/pre-order date that there's going to be a mad dash of people trying to huck their credit card numbers RED's way?

Well, if we have been waiting for years a little longer will make no difference. In the meantime I keep shooting beautiful footage with my GH1.

The biggest hurdle for EVERYONE is going to be the modules. They better have 2 Million of the modules ready to go when the cameras start rolling. I'm also guessing that Epic owners will trump everyone else when it comes to the modules. 1000 person waiting list for a I/O modules for scarlet.

RED is going to have to really get their company/process in order well before this camera starts shipping. I just bought a RED ONE and it's been a very different experience than buying any other gear. I bought a slew of 5D mkII's from B and H photo and all I did was go online and buy them. the next day everything I ordered arrived. We bought an HDX-900 from a reseller and had it all in a few days.

I'm less worried about current Red One owners scooping up scarlets (unless they do plan on pumping out 25k units in the first batch there will for sure be a limit) and more concerned about the general public/late adopters jumping on the bandwagon. In a few months, even before the new cameras release, Red is going to become one very popular company because, unlike the R1, the fixed scarlet is geared toward the 7d/5dmkII kind of crowd, which is massive.

Thinking we have some sort of advantage because we're on this forum is balogne. The day the preorder process is revealed on here, any photography site/blog or places like engadget are going to be covering it. And by that time it's not hard to imagine that the Red advertisement campaign (however small it is) will be underway, and then all these 7D owners will be able to see the difference in quality and the not so difference in price.

The Red One might as well have been considered limited edition at 7,000 units and from the sounds of it they're taking a different approach to scarlet and that's something we're going to deal with (hopefully) soon.

The theory that they might only release 1,000 or so into the wild to ensure no bugs/defects sounds, unortunately, plausible. I'm no business major but all the major camera companies never do this, but this is RED which is why it's so hard to speculate and if the RED ONE launch taught us anything it's that RED does it their way and that's usually at a turtles pace.

Who cares about Scarlet? Sign me up for the IPO!

Personally, as much as I am eager for a Scarlet, how about an IPO from RED!! I can scrape together some cash to buy a Scarlet outright, but I might be willing to up the mortgage on my house to buy into an initial public offering of RED!! Let the fun begin.

:hurray:

Panavision might clue you into Red's future if there is a failure to adapt to the changing marketplace, as I think they could use your cash...

But seriously, I'm happy if Red just proceeds on chart and releases a flawless Scarlet and accessories in mass quantity as proposed (Hopefully by NAB 2011).

I believe you are right about that; word will travel very, very fast. Then again, if we are paying attention, at least we are not likely to be behind.

As an aside, I don't however, believe RED will waste their money on any significant advertising until they feel they need to further stimulate demand (and can meet that demand) or burnish their brand (which hardly needs it, at this point.).

This whole thing is going to be very fun once it gets rolling!

On a totally self serving note: It would be fantastic if (outside of the tattoo/epic system) you could order the Scarlet based on REDUSER/SCARLETUSER membership date/number before John Q Public saunters onto Gizmodo and decides he wants one of them "ultra HD camcorders".

Before anyone flames me/this idea to death please note the following: Yes, I know this is completely unrealistic. Yes I know it may not be the "fairest" option for all.

It's the option that suits me the best, that's all :)

Actually, I was thinking of this too as a reasonably fair way to do "first dibs" on Scarlets. And in terms of full disclosure, it doesn't necessarily benefit me - if I was being selfish I would push for RED order ship dates - since I placed my deposit for SN206 in April of 2006 but didn't join REDUSER until 12-29-2006.

Haha, that would be great! At least they could email all reduser members a special link a few hours before they opened it up the floodgates perhaps, that required a reduser login?

Perhaps everyone who has been a member for more than a month or something like that, and just for a couple of extra hours...

I think that when the scarlet fixed goes on sale it will change RED as a company forever. Think of tech support alone – they are seriously going to be staffing up.

I don't know about that... For every Red One owner, I'm sure there were at least 5-10 who wished they had one and would pay $5,000.

I don't think you can estimate Scarlet numbers by the Red One. First of all it's a very different, and much larger market. Second Red is no longer a risk, it's the obvious future!

I don't think any figure should be rejected. Could be 5,000, could be 100,000! :coolgleamA:

Remember, those 7000 RED Ones have been selling over a couple of years now.

25000 Scarlets on first day seems a little insane to me, but anything's possible. 25000 Scarlets in the first 3 months, however, is possible.

I am trusting RED to have prepared themselves well for this demand, but I still fear backorders of months.

I reached my fixed Scarlet $ goal last week so I'm ready whenever they ship. Now to start saving for accessories or a better Scarlet while we wait : )

Canon and the 5D

Canon and the 5D

Although the Red Scarlet will not be as mainstream as the Canon 5DMk2, if Canon was unable to meet the world demand for their $4,000.00 camera, it is doubtful that Red could anticipate the pent up demand for Scarlet. The rightest way to handle the situation would be a pre-order. If I could, I would pre-order and pre-pay for a Scarlet in full right now.:lurk5:
