Jon Jon Augustavo directed and Cinematography by Mego Lin

Macklemore and Ryan Lewis took home MTV Video Music Awards for Best Hip-Hop Video and Best Cinematography for their epic video “Can’t Hold Us.”

The video was shot on EPICs and SCARLETs around the world and has more than 113 million views on YouTube. RED spoke with Ryan Lewis in April about his experience with the SCARLET and video directing as an independent artist.

"Investing in a RED setup first and foremost made music videos feel much more like films. The aesthetic of an SLR within music videos is now very common to a viewers eye. It’s a particular look that works for some video concepts but wasn’t satisfying some of the more extensive videos I wanted to make…"

With that recognition from the music video industry, the investment clearly paid off — and then some. Ryan Lewis wasn’t exaggerating about those “more extensive” music videos he wanted to make. Both “Can’t Hold Us” and its successor “Same Love” top seven minutes in length. “Same Love” won the VMA for Best Video With a Social Message.

RED congratulates music video visionaries Macklemore and Ryan Lewis on their wins and looks forward to their next project.

Nice. Let's not forget to lend some little love to Jon Jon Augustavo, a Hello & Company heavyweight who directed those vids.

Jon Jon and Cinematographer Mego Lin put some ridiculous hours in on these videos as well. The win was well deserved for all.

Updated, thanks for the notes.

Congrats on a transformative video by Macklemore & Lewis. RED Cinema at it's best.

Shame to waste such beautiful images / great cinematography on something you have to watch on mute. Deserves a great song. S'pose anybody involved with producing this video even met the person who wrote the lyrics, or does the record label take care of all that?

To each their own. A lot of what goes into Macklemore's videos and songs could be attributed to Ryan Lewis himself. So I'm sure he met the writer..

The album both these songs are from is one of the few I've played on a loop on Spofity this year. My opinion, is that the lyrics are far better than a lot of the other stuff out there. Not saying your opinion is wrong, just that it's not universal.

I love the Same Love video, in that it doesn't feel preachy or forced. The video, to me, feels natural, and heartfelt. It approaches the subject matter as an "obviously" type thing. What I love about the Can't Hold Us video is that there's one shot with a grid of red circles, so as soon as I saw that shot I knew "Shot on Red". It looks like the type of thing a music video would add in post after a lot of play back and forth. Nope: in-camera.

I suppose you didn't listen to the lyrics for same love? I think that has a pretty good message, one that you typically won't find in hip hop. Also the people behind these songs and videos were far more on the indie side of things than being just the product of "big record label."
