Just bought a Mac Book Pro 2.53 GHz, 4 GB RAM and a standard 320 GB 5400 RPM Hard drive. I know that the system requires a 7200 RPM Drive for the RED Video, so I also bought a 1 TB G-Raid.

What I am asking is would I be better getting the 7200 RPM internal drive as well? The system is sluggish when screening the RED footage.

Thanks

are you putting all your footage externally?

Hello Jarred

Yes, all footage will be on a 7200 RPM external drive.

that g-raid should be able to handle well just make sure you are using firewire. select the right quality in redcine for playback, and if its a new macbook pro, use the super graphics card option as redcine relies heavily on the graphics card.

The model I bought has a "NVIDIA GeForce 9400M + 9600M GT with 512MB."

Would that be considered a super graphics card?

Also, Jarred. Do you know where I might be able to find some documentation for REDCine and RED ALERT! that I could download and print? I know there are videos, put a manual would be much more useful.

Thanks.

I bought a camera... and I am actually writing and email to Brent... unfortunately we had problems with the camera again :(
It has been in Red HQ for repair already once... and now I guess it will have to go back :(
Can you gimme even more special treatment on this one? We have to fly there to take the camera!?

i just put in the new 7200 rpm 320gb in my macbook pro , way better. 4 gb ram ,2.33 17in.

Just did the same thing about 2 weeks ago. The 320GB 7200rpm is a nice upgrade and very cheap. I think under $80 after rebate, IIRC. BTW, I have a 160GB 5400rpm drive for sale. :whistling:

I almost went for the 500GB 5400rpm, it has a much higher density and very similar transfer rates. I went with the smaller 7200rpm drive because it's been out longer and has a history of good reviews. It's also a bit faster on the seek times and for continuous randomized access if your data is not sequential all the time.

If you're putting your footage externally I'd go for 128 GB SSD drive, about $250, and use the 320 GB for daily Time Machine backup. It is much faster on the seek times and randomized access, I feel sometimes it is faster than my 8-core MacPro, no noise and rugged.
