Mac vs. Windows...

Mac

Really need 3 categories:

1. Windows preferred due to the non-stop flow of innovation and openness (ex: BluRay, 3D, 4K gaming).
I like power machines and it's simply Windows, while Apple is focused more on consumer products- more profit to them is cool.
Yes, the Windows flexibility means more compatibility issues but for techs it is manageable and tons of choices for customization...

2. Hackintosh

3. Mac's ... are OK but they take too long to release new product. I do like the Retina MacBook however too little customization for my taste and no 17" ...

It's a lot easier to choose from all three categories and be happy since bottom line- they're all Intel underneath (for the time being)...

Mac gave up on the pro user - period. They just want to sell iPads and iPhones now since that's how they make money.
If you want to cut a feature on your outdated Mac Pro with limited video cards with FCPX - be my guest. For half the price you can run the same programs at twice the speed for half the price. Yeah, Macs look prettier, the operating system is slightly better and their innovation is wonderful.
But they gave up on the pros. So I'm back to PC and not caring one bit.

Indeed. But I still love Mac

Mac. Retina Macbook Pro- best laptop I ever owned. Thunderbolt. Works fantastic- Rocket in external box is a game changer. I expect the upcoming Mac Pro to be "the" computer to have for all production needs. Having been contacted by a Final Cut Pro X employee after an issue here also made me feel assured of their commitment. Will stick with Apple for the time being.

I agree. I own a Retina macbook pro as well and its the best laptop ever. I can't get over how thin and fast it is. i7 quad core coupled with SSD system drive, thunderbolt, and USB 3.0 makes it a game changer. Add an external PCI chassis and couple it with Rocket and you've got a super lightweight, portable DIT station/editing machine. Also wanna point out that the CUDA technology works wonders. I've got the latest iMac with 2gb Nvidia chip and it allows me to cut 5k footage at 1/4 res natively in Premiere. Amazing. Real game changer.

I noted before I prefer both MAC and Win7, duel boot (have your cake and eat it too), but as far as reliability I've been on the same Windows 7 installs for 2 years and I've had to reinstall or roll back the Mac OS on all of my macbook pro's partitions several times in the last two years, especially in the last 6 months. The macbook pro is rated as the #1 gaming Windows laptop as well, if that makes anyone feel better, lol.

Even though Apple has had a rough few years and I can't get the new iteration of Final Cut to work the way I want it to for the life of me, OSX is still the superior platform. Premiere has shown great potential and hopefully we'll see a new tower this year. Though I was a PC user for 28 years, you couldn't get me back on Windows even if that was the only OS that ran a Red Rocket. Even Windows 8 feels like stepping back in time a decade to me...

So I guess the real question everyone would like to know is, what's the point of this thread?

Mac and Windows are pretty similar in a lot of ways, in many cases, one's preference comes down to what one knows best how to use, no matter how hard people try to pretend it is something else. I could probably get by on both, but I am used to windows due to the flexibility and availability and price of the associated hardware. If anyone really gave either a chance, they would likely find they could easily do 99% of what they need to on either operating system, with the exception of certain platform specific tools.

I would be interested to see the actual composition of Redusers by OS preference using a poll... Windows clearly has the greater market share in the global computing market, but its possible Mac OS has the majority of redusers.

Mmmm

Mmmm

Jim are you going to build a better computer now too?

PC

I've worked with macs for several years, and even now I use them everyday at work. I still will never buy one myself. I like to build my own computers and have several options to get what I want, as well as full control over the end results, not to mention confidence that the people behind my PC don't seem like they'll abandon me or any of my ambitions anytime soon. And for some reasons, macs seem to hate me just the same. I get problems on them that confuse the mac lovers I'm around all the time, so that's another problem I have with them.

So yeah, PC forever.

Is anyone worried about EOL on Windows 7? How long?

Considering Windows 2000 was just moved to EOL less than a year ago, I think we have some time. ;) The massive backward compatibility and legacy support bloat is both a blessing and curse in the PC world. If you build a new PC, it's guaranteed to be obsolete by the time you get it to perform reliably. As for EOL, that's a different matter... Your peripherals within the system needing third-party drivers will EOL long before the OS will.

Jim are you going to build a better computer now too?

Hehe. That would be interesting. And if they do decide to take on such a project, I hope they talk to me. Because I think everyone else in the industry is doing it wrong.

In reality, I think Peter is right. This could be a covert way of keeping tabs on preferred platforms to target their primary development efforts. In that case, I say Mac. Yes, Windows systems can be built more powerful at the moment. Windows sucks balls.

So windows 2000 was released Feb 2000 and lasted till 2012. 12 years. Windows 7 was released October 2009 and thus you can assume it will last I would think a maximum 12 years but I would think it is likely to be earlier. That makes it 2021. At that time I guess we will all have to be on Windows 8.

Just thinking out loud as I bounce back and forth on the Mac PC thing almost every day.
