  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Mac Speedgrade CC is a much more stable for stereoscopic work than CS6

I've lived with Speedgrade CS6 constant lockups and render failures with 4K stereo R3D through quite a few projects (MacPro 12-core, 36-gig), but I finally had to try to resolve (no pun intended) the situation. I'm in deep in a project with a massive number of stereo clips that need to pass thru Speedgrade. Almost every R3D stereo pair (especially the long takes) required a Speedgrade CS6 restart between renders. So... I decided to pull the trigger on a CC subscription. It's a whole lot better with regard to stability. I've had only one crash after 10 hours of hard use. It's closer to useable for me now - and results in far less foul language emerging from my office.

I think the CC model will actually help development of Adobe products. More $$ coming in can lead to justifying spending considerable $$ on development.

Better cashflow combined with a much less expensive and more robust rollout of dot updates also allows the developers to fix problems faster and get the updates out in the wild. Probably coincidence but I've had a couple of experiences where an Adobe product crashes for a week or two (with logs sent to Adobe) and suddenly an update arrives and fixes the issue. Gotta love that.

I don't want to put too fine a point on the "CC improvement" for someone considering diving in a using Speedgrade CC (particularly on the Mac) for a demanding project - it's still wanky as hell. It has crashed on me quite a bit when grading, but not when rendering.

I also have a persistent issue with long R3D take across the entire suite of Adobe apps. They don't play well together. I need to trim long takes into pieces in Redcine-X before working with them in Speedgrade, After Effects, or Premiere. I always intend to look into the problem - but - in the heat of battle just work around it every time.
