Have a five year old Mac Pro tower and it is a bit slow and thinking about upgrading. I just got one of the new MacBook Pros and it flies when editing 4K with Premiere Pro 6.

If we were to purchase a 12 core MAC Pro is it going to be a noticeable difference than with my new Macbook Pro? Most of time we edit pieces shot in 4K that are less than 30 min in length. I know you can add video cards and the like to speed things up, but I am talking both machines straight out of the box from apple.

Unless you absolutely need a new Mac Pro now, my recommendation is to wait. The current Mac Pros use older generation processors and a whole new Mac Pro design is coming next year, likely using the latest processors and probably will have Thunderbolt and USB3 I'd guess.

Stick with the MacBook Pro for now. Even on my Pro tower, 8 core 2.9gig, 48GB Ram, 15,000 RPM RAID 0 hard drive, and 1GB GTX 285 video card, I get half res max without a rocket. Even then, sometimes it bogs down and I edit in 1/4 res. A touch slower with CUDA enabled. Yes, software off the CPU's is faster for me.

If you are getting 1/2 res with MBP, be happy.
