  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

mac pro and macbook pro

...In the meantime, best bet is to continue to educate producers and post production supervisors about workflow options that suit their needs.

Which was ultimately the purpose of my post. Again I am quite embarrassed that I f**ked up on the numbers...

...BTW, using the above method I shot a commercial for a client the day before I left on this trip. The night before I output proRes files, and cut the spots on the plane, then conformed the project by uploading the FCP project file to my big machine back at the office, and started the conform remotely. When I got home, the project was all ready to go ;-)

cheers

Hi Colin

Would appreciate you elaborating on this? What software, remote connection are you using to remote start the conform. Are you using a secure VPN?

Thanks!
Eric

I uploaded the FCP project file via FTP to our servers. Logged in via secure VPN to my machine at the office that allows me to see my desktop and control my machine, opened the FCP project in FCP, exported an EDL within FCP. Used Monkey Extract to conform the clips from the EDL. I logged out, and logged back in the next day to check the footage. All was good, relinked when I got home.

We all make mistakes man, don't let it eat at you. :cheers2:

Like I said, the overall process is what's important. It's a good method for doing a quick turnaround. And you did show them a final piece the next day.

no problem!

just was depressed since it takes my macbook pro all night for like half an hour of 4K 16:9 redcode 36, so it just sounded too good :)

you use redrushes right?

...actually I use Monkey Extract when I'm running out rushes on my laptop, but I use Red Rocket when I run rushes out on my Mac Pro.

Thanks for that, Colin.

Any particular VPN? Don't really know much about them, but sounds like a good way of increasing productivity.

Thanks

I've used various VPN solutions over the years, but recently I'm having good success with the built in "Back to my Mac" as part of the .mac / mobileme package. Works great, very reliable, and quick. The only thing is you need to be hard wired to get access to your systems. When on wireless, the systems don't show up.

exactly what M Most said (if that is your real name?) plus that's a lot of data to lug around if you were to, let's say pass along the footage to another editor.

As well I like to cut in real time, with real time effects, I guess you could use the _M proxies, but not nearly as elegant as using small ProRes files.

I'm not saying that my methodology is the best for all situations, but in this situation it worked. Getting the project done is one thing, getting it done on time so I live up to my word is another.

Of course as a user above noted you could hump a Mac Pro all the way there to aid in the process, but sometimes that isn't practical.

Colin,

You have to explain this process As I would use it when I have to turn in projects...

Hey c-well, what are your questions, as I thought I explained it fairly well on page 1 of this thread.

Sorry I just read it... I do still want to understand what's happening when you access ya system at home remotely and so far I gathered that -

- You were on a 15" MBP via wifi (were u using a wifi-card or the plane had wifi)
- You used .mac to access your macpro from home
- You uploaded what smaller proxy files of your edit to the web? (which is what offline)
- you reconnected the original footage once you got home?

Am I at all right here?

I transcoded all the footage the night before to a 32GB USB keychain. (I also had the duplicate footage on my system at the office.)

Once I got settled in my seat for the 8hr flight I started cutting.

I finished the cut about an hour before landing.

Once I got to my hotel, I connected to the highspeed in my room, and uploaded the FCP project file to my private FTP server, Once it was uploaded I connected to my machine at home via remote desktop, and loaded the FCP project on my system at the office, and relinked from the previously processed, duplicate files I had at the office. From there I exported an EDL of the cut, loaded the EDL in Monkey Extract, and started the hi-res conform of the project. From here I disconnected, and had some staff at the office keep an eye on the system (to make sure the system didn't crash or go down)

The next morning, I logged back into my system, and reconnected to my system at the office, and replaced the offline clips with the online clips. Checked the edit against the offline, and output a H264 version that I downloaded back to my notebook.

There really wasn't anything special with what I did with the conform, only that I did the work remotely. I spent the time in advance to do a best light on the footage, so I knew what the images were going to look like.

I guess the best thing I did was prep all the footage, music, sound effects ect. in advance, and had them with me. I also had all the material duplicated at the office, making it very easy to recreate the project at the office.

This isn't the first time I've done work remotely like this, in fact I remember one time being on vacation, and having an emergency job that a client needed material for. By connecting remotely, and coordinating with my team at home, We were able to get everything out the door. One funny thing is my staff said it was a bit creepy to have my system, and an HDCAM deck looking like it was doing the work on it's own. :-)

Thank you... Very detailed and what I was asking. Just wanted to know how it all went down. When I 1st read it I thought you were saying you edited while in flight and uploaded the footage via wifi in the air (I was like reallllllly?? amazing).

Also Colin not to be a pain but when you did the RED over night edit what drive did you use to edit and transcode on?

I guess if my plane had Wi-Fi I could have uploaded mid flight. But no I waited until I was on the ground.

My original RAW files were on RAID 5 and I transcoded everything to a 32GB USB stick. So my offline was done on the little 32GB stick, and the online on a separate RAID. We use ProAVIO RAIDs primarily.
