Mac Pro 2013 + FCPX won't make proxies from R3D

So, I have a completely maxed out 2013 Mac Pro, and it's been wonderful to work with R3D natively. No need for a RED Rocket so far. It plays 5K footage like a YouTube video. But I have some footage that needs to stay on a USB 3.0 hard drive for portability, and it's lagging. When I create optimized media, everything plays smooth, but that's taking up way too much space. The drive is completely full.

I want it to make proxies, but it's grayed out. Any idea why?
