Looking for some feed back on this. Almost inconceivable that this is a valid comparison - but Apple is to thank for it.
I currently have a trash can 6 Core 3.5ghz with the Twin D700’s. As we know this is essentially not upgradeable. Looking at the top spec Mac mini - 6 Core 3.2ghz with turbo boost to 4.6ghz latest i7 coffee lake processor. Now I understand the GPU is not in the same ball park BUT. . . . the Mac mini is eGPU ‘upgradeable’ through an external TB3 setup.
So here’s the thing. For what I can sell my trash can for, I can purchase a top spec mini and have some cash left to purchase a reasonable eGPU. So what is the better solution for the same money? Given the upgradability of the mini can’t help but see it’s the smart money.
A couple of things to note. Apparently cooling on the mini is not great. However given that this machine is for Davinci Resolve where the bulk of heavy lifting is done by the gpu, cooling should not be much of an issue. Any concern could be alleviated by a cooling pad.
The other point - what graphics card? Really looking for the BEST VALUE option here - not the cheapest nor NECESSARILY the most expensive. For dollars spent what is going to give the best result?
Finally I’m guessing this setup will be more powerful than the Mac Pro. If so, thoughts on its capability of handling 4K timeline with multiple node grading in real time. (Media running off internal SSD with 64 gig ram)
Any thoughts, ideas, suggestions, articles, experience, (and even opinions) would be greatly appreciated.
Blessings
Craig
