  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

M-X Reel

Sorry about that, got started from the Moire questions. Any further discussion on that will be elsewhere! People tangent easy!

Again, thanks for putting this together. The low light performance is something a lot of people are looking forward to. The MX sensor seems to really shine.

Among the best $5000 spends ever.

make sure to come to red day to see it in 4K.

As you know I saw the M-X reel projected in 4k a few weeks ago (1/16) at Red Studios Hollywood, at the Red Day for early serial number camera owners. My impression? In one word: I-M-P-R-E-S-S-I-V-E!

Great work on the M-X sensor Red Team. The new Sony SXRD T series projector really did it justice too. Really nice work Dino, Michael Cioni, and whoever else was involved in shooting the footage and processing it. The increased dynamic range of the M-X sensor was really evident...I remember repeatedly smiling and nodding my head as I watched the M-X 4k reel projected.

Red Day on 1/16 was like a class reunion at a candy store...it was way good to see so many of the other early Red adopters, and of course my Red Team friends

Great looking stuff! What focal length/lens was used for the skaters outside downhill ? The Masterprime 14mm ?

we used the ultra prime 8mm on the very narrow hill and we used the optimo rouge 30-80 for mullholland.

loved the snow VW shot!! and were the "boarders" ramped up at all?

I love the shot where the skateboarder (or whatever he is), comes up fast on the camera car and puts on the brakes. Pure adrenalin.

I can imagine what he's thinking: "WTF, move it you idiot! Why are you going so slow!" and inside the camera car "Uh speed up a bit Joe, speed up, speed up, SPEED UP! Fuck that was close. (Hope I got that)." At that speed, to scrub off the momentum by sliding sideways while going about 50 klicks is clutch; good on them both.

Beautiful, fun. I love that POV stuff, the RED pulls it off with aplomb. If you're on a stunt movie with lots of B, C cam, it's amazing. Down shift to 3K, up the frame rate, shoot everything at 60, 90 fps. Why not? The up-res (if screening 4K) is AB-solutely beside the point when stuff is happening at that speed (*cough avatar at 2K). Got more than 10 minutes screen time of action B-cam? Hell, I'll just buy one myself and rent it to the production. Less than that? Rent one from a RED guy around here, their guy can be the Op or the 2nd unit director. Everyone profits.

Brave new paradigm. Won't take them more than about 10 seconds to realize that film would be stupid. I'm sorry, but ANY decent colourist can make it look like the A-Cam, you've got all the latitude you need to replicate any film-stock, if you're still stubborn enough for film on principal. Just bend the curve the way you want, you've got lots left over.

Break the camera on the stunt? Sad, but replacing it is still cheaper than the deductible on the Panavision prime lens! Panavision, like Silicon Graphics, is soon going to be wondering WTF happened.

Hope that RED ramps up their production quick so everyone who wants it can get it quick. They've got nothing to worry about; there's nothing else like it.

MX 4K Stills

MX 4K Stills

I've added a few more 4K stills for some evaluation.
These files were debayered at full-res high in Pablo and graded by Ian Vertovec at 4096x1756.
I've picked a few frame grabs that demonstrate some notable benefits of the new MX sensor.
Please be respectful of these files as they are for testing and evaluation. Though I realize they will likely be evaluated as still frames by noses touching computer displays, I think they really show how MX motion can hold up as stills - especially since most of them were acquired at high speeds.

Good stuff Michael, definitely also shows how not difficult is to pull off frame grabbing in such high quality form Motion capture.

BTW, was it you that talked about the "Von Card"? If so can you direct me to were to get one? Thanks, and look forward in doing some work together, should have the MX upgrades soon, and we will shoot some S3D stuff @ ET to bring the footage to you.

Thank you for the additional TIFFs Michael. And thank you for the ungraded snow!

I am posting this slightly moody personal approach at such a beautiful shot. I do so with the utmost respect, but still worried that you may have in fact meant for us not to re-post them at all, even here. Please, let me know if you want me to take down, and I will in a heart beat.

I hastily pushed the file back and forth several times. I changed my mind several times, never reverting to do it in fewer steps. Yet I didn't notice any degradation in PS at 16-bit, 2k. I think I did curves, saturation, more curves, sharpening, selective color, an other selective color, one more instance of curves and a touch of exposure. Yet I see no issues at all. Just pure malleable goodness.

mx reel quicktime error

mx reel quicktime error

anyone else getting a

"Error 2048 - Couldn't open the file because its not a file Quicktime understands".

when trying to download from the link...

i'm on a pc windows xp laptop...i can view many of the other reels...just having problems opening this one.

skateboarding was NOT ramped up, that is all 23.98 4.5k rc42...they were just going very very fast, much faster than a porche cayenne can go down a steep hill with many many switchbacks. also remember the driver of the pursuit vehicle matt moses also did transformers, fast and furious and many many other movie that required him to break speed limit laws. so he knows how to drive fast and push the cars limits, but these guys were just plain faster.

dino

kkkkkk... i just remenber 18 years ago, my mother use to say that i could kill myself with the skateboard.. she was right!
Great Job guys! just waiting for the release of scarlet to buy it.
