  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Luxology and The Foundry got married

Nuke has already implemented basic 3d modeling in their package. I can see a future integrated system with serious modeling and the compositor on the same screen. Model, render, composite, colour correct - done.

I've often wished for something like this when I'm hopping between nuke, after effects and 3rd Max.

Yep... this is really exciting stuff!

I'm more of a Maya / Cinema 4D / XSI guy myself but I heard Modo was a great package.

If I want a simple, clean codebase to integrate with a compositing app, Modo is a great choice.

Softimage XSI would have been fun too... but probably too complex / expensive? And then Autodesk bought it.

BTW, Adobe really missed an opportunity here.

It makes me wonder what the foundry are gonna do with modo now

Modo has been improving a lot with each release. Animation is really starting to come into play now. I can only imagine how great it will be to be able to have direct integration into a compositor.

Any other 3D programs linked into compositing?

I would imagine that they will keep going with it as a standalone app but gradually make it more and more fluid to send stuff to Nuke and vice versa, until at some point it feels like you're just in one seamless playground?

Bear in mind that also this slots in well with their other product, Mari.

Softimage XSI did it for years... if I'm not mistaken, I remember being blown away with the node based compositing of render layers back in 2002 or so!

The issue is that Softimage DS being a separate, expensive product meant that they never developed it into what it could be, methinks.

Blender has it too now, I think.

I was checking this out this mourning ... very interesting.

All sorts of opportunities occur when the 3d package is merged with the deep compositing package. Blender has added node based camera solve, keying, masking, opencolorio and is almost completely transformed from it's 3d object builder roots ... but blender node compositing really just got full featured this month, so is a bit clunky and has not started deep pixels nodes (i.e. openexr 2.0).

Us corporate and low budget guys are choking a bit on the "high end FEATURE" based pricing of nukex (i.e. is $8k for nukex, the base nuke isn't very compelling for me) . Will be interesting to see how fast blender catches up with the compositing side of nuke, while the foundry hopefully integrates 3d modeling with deep compositing. This merge gives me one more plus for going the full Nukex plunge.

A pretty nice interview:

Yep. It's not just the corporate and low budget guys either, buddy :) My fingers are crossed that The Foundry would lower prices a little bit - Modo is very reasonable in that regard!

There are some deals every few months - eg upgrades from After Effects... or Summer Sales, etc. But damn, it's still expensive. And Ocula - ouch!

I don't really see Blender catching up any time soon. It would be awesome if it did, of course! But I think that the "value" propositions are Fusion and After Effects... if you have skilled artists, it is a waste to make them use Blender. So far. Like you say, it would be great if it changed of course!

For me nuke without the x doesn't seem to make much sense. I wonder how long it will take them to really make the 2 sing together. Modo and Nuke that is. It would be awesome if they had a killer deal for Moro users.

Lighting and Comp are in my opinion the same position. Where 3D ends and 2D begins in my lighting setups is a constantly evolving gradient not a hard line. I will tweak lights in 2D, add lights in 2.5D and get as far as I can interactively in the comp and then tweak the 3D scene. It's a back and forth process. What I want more than anything is final raytraced AOVs in real-time in Nuke. It's undoubtedly the future and it's great to see a 3D package and Nuke working together. I've been trying to push everyone I can get to listen to me to talk to Bill about doing that and it looks like ILM was able to finally make it happen. Very exciting news.

When I look at the reels of people in these nuke threads, I'm super impressed. The approach your outlining is the future - the reels looks so much better, the cinematic story comes across so much clearer ... seems at least 70% of the content I'm excited about is foundry or ILM related(i.e. deep compositing with ray tracing).

I'd really love a sub-forum in "red workflow"focused on the foundry problem solving. Devils in the details on workflows, and the node based approach the foundry is using really helps me understand all this new fanangled technology(the node screen shots really explain it all). Would love it if the sub-forum focused on problem solving for RED workflows on feature/commercial budgets between $50k to $10M.

[edit ...]

Gavin ... btw was researching your comment on final ratraced AOV's and ran across the book "Illuminated Pixels" by Virginia Bowman Wissler. Has helped me out a lot, for example I use to always do a depth mapped shadow and send that to compositing separately ... now I understand when I need to do a ray traced shadow and have that integrated with the main trace. This book is btw one to get physically, since understanding the shading examples are important as you read it.

Bruce ... researching what you said ... I've decided to do move a bunch of my rendering from blender to modo ... is making the 3d integration with r3d more seamless ;)
