  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

"Lupe" a 4K short on YouTube!

I'm on a new 27 inch iMac with the 2560 x 1440 screen. It looks FANTASTIC for the first few shots but then gets quite pixilated soon after, especially when the camera moves. I wonder why that is? I don't have any buffering issues and it plays in real time.

This is a huge step for RED. It'll help make 4K a household name.

You're kidding right? Google has become the behemoth it is on click based advertising and Youtube is no small part of their future plans for world domination.

Half kidding... How long before they add fees to the ads?

and another nail in the coffin for trying to find revenue for independent films... I know lots of people think this is a good thing, but not me. yes, more people will see your work, but no revenue. If you're lucky you'll get a great opportunity to make another one for free. The smartest people on the planet can't figure out how to monitize the web.

edit: and when I say "monitize" I mean for film & video content other then porn :)

Chris, YouTube gave me the budget for this short, and I in turn paid the people involved a proper rate as well as being able to pocket as much as I would have made on a full rate shooting day with my camera system.
The other announcement that YouTube made today was their $5,000,000 partner program of which I was one of the first participants. They will be investing directly in new content, and that is good for all of us.

Thank you for sharing Evin.

Watching it at "Original" setting on a 1080 screen does get rid of YouTube's compression nastiness! Very cool.

Side note, maybe one could upres 1080 material before uploading it, just to avoid the compression.

Not really, well not yet anyway. I agree that it would if they had a "4k" setting.

The manner in which you were paid to produce this content is not what I was talking about.

Will their license fees be comparable to broadcast? I'm a filmmaker, not a hired-gun, so my perspective is different. I understand the biz is changing and all that, but feature films below the big hollywood stuff have taken a beating in sales potential. Everybody knows this, but nobody knows what to do about it. Great films still cost real money.

Congrats Evin for the nice shot.
Its a pitty that the bitrate is still so low, though. You can clearly see the macroblocking on a 1080p screen.

The point alludes me I must say.

Who is this for? The people with 4k projectors that prefer YouTube's compression method?

Although, it is good to see big companies investing in new content. Really wish feature film studios would bring back the shorts before the film. . .

But select "1080" and watch it again. Big difference. :)
I have looked at the file sizes. Your video has the following bitrates:
1080p: ~2.88 mbps
4K: ~4.99 mbps
meanwhile 720p itunes hd is ratet at 4 mbps, 1080i HDTV between 10 and 20 mbps and 1080p bluray at 40 mbps.
So in summary: great to see 4k, but the bitrate/codec seriously needs to improve, no matter what resolution. vimeo levels would be a start ;)

I think the point is there is now a real 4K distibution outlet for those that don't have millions of dollars or a cineplex. The compression will get better with time but we need to start raising awareness now. In our little filmmaking bubbles we all know what 4k is but to the outside world that's still baffeled why thier DVDs aren't HD on the new flat panel it's gonna take time and exposure. YouTube has now made it possible, at least once the hardware and bandwidth become available.

Yep, I agree. I'm curious about how this will evolve.

As beautiful and stunning as it looks, I can't watch it in 4K. My internet can't load the video fast enough and play it back smoothly.

Looks like I'm watching a series of still photographs that abruptly cut.

Still, congrats guys cause it looks amazing

I think this is great, and I hope that it will push the other higher-bitrate video services to give 4k as an option as well. Also, now we really need that QuadHD/4k-display :)

Sure, but I am merely pointing out that YouTube can finally be used for "decent" HD, if you cheat it. :)

Get it loading and hit pause, then hit play once it is all there.
