Hi Folks,

I know that many of you are being tempted and teased by the pending release of the LTO-5 technology and I wanted to share where things currently stand.

The major vendors had hoped to have engineering samples in the hands of ISVs and partners by the end of last November. Unfortunately, while the drive mechanisms were almost there, the recording head technology and media manufacturing were not.

We are getting closer and hope to have things to announce by the first of March, but things are still being worked out with the manufacturing processes.

The base line here for customers is that it looks like we're looking at a mid-Summer (Northern Hemisphere) release.

Here are the known factors:

  • Only available in SAS and Fibre-Channel versions
  • 1.5TB per tape native capacity
  • 140MB/sec native maximum write speed
  • Backwards write compatible with LTO-4 and read compatible back to LTO-3

And most importantly, it appears that the release of LTO-5 is not going to affect the pricing of previous LTO versions. If you've been waiting for LTO-5 to buy LTO-4 at a lower price, that isn't going to happen for a while.

I'll post more info as it becomes available.
