This may not be a priority for many but I find it tricky...

We often shoot without a q-take playback setup and or are working of-speed. In these situations camera playback is Important and the low quality playback of the Dragon is challenging (both from a confidence and practical pov). We lug around at least a 1080p 17inch Grade 1 and often bigger. Currently there is little point... If I was to guess I'd say playback of 6k is reduced to less than 1/4 Rez.. What makes this even more tricky is that there is NO rocket we can use to playback to a proper monitor on set. So the net effect is Red files can't playback HQ with red kit on set (using proper monitoring)...

Am I doing anything wrong?

Is this going to be fixed?

Can it actually be improved?

Any thoughts??

Thanks and hopefully I am just doing something wrong...

Ps What is maybe happening is that most guys are either above or bellow us in terms of how much Kit they drag around. Either they are bigger players with all the 3rd party toys or run and gun and don't care..

I guess on-board playback was never intended to feed more than smaller monitors with up to 1080p.

A few simple thoughts:
There is that 4k broadcast-module.
A laptop with 4k-panel and fast Nvidia-GPU might be the simplest and cheapest solution today.
Tethered shooting/playback will hopefully emerge sooner than later.

Michael,

I think your easier / cheaper option would be to go Samurai Blade / Shogun or another 3G-SDI recorder with rec triggering...

With the added benefit of having separate playback controls and have realtime backups / dailies / proxies...

Shogun should have 3D Luts support in the upcoming end of feb update...

Different off speed resolutions playback differently. 3k looks the best on playback from the dragon where as 4, 5 or 6k looks worse. I think 5k playback was the worst though when I was doing some testing. Obvious I suppose 3k looks the best with the half debayer.
