Hey,

I've had to do a night time shoot where I was pretty much limited to using a single sodium street lamp.

I've read threads about shooting 'Night like Day' but the budget and circumstance meant there wasn't much to be done.

I'm only going up to ISO 400 and some of the footage does look a little on the grainy side when I start grading. I'm thinking of using Red Cine for some basic grading fist then taking it into colour.

If anyone has any pointers to reduce the grain it would be very helpful.

Thanks in advance,
K

p.s this is on an M sensor.

Have you heard about Meat Video? It is very affordable and can do a great job if handled with care. http://www.neatvideo.com/

I am curious to see it if you can post a grab.

Thanks Roberto.

Below is a still before any grade was done:

What has been your experience with neatvideo? Could it work with the footage above?

Have you try to re-white balance in color or Redcine, depends on your light on-Set but some times reduce a lot of noise.

I work with "de-noise" software and it´s amazing.

anyway if DP underexpose...

Thanks Vico.

We were using a 1.4 50mm lens opened up to the max. So, it was as much light as it was gonna get. Which 'de-noise' software do you use?

Cheers.

Looks like a tough one. Of course make sure to run the footage through a full debayer first.

Show us what it looks like when you are done. It is always interesting to see the before and afters.

I'm wondering, how does after effects handle noise reduction? Would it save me from having to purchase a plugin?

Cheers,

p.s yes MX all the way, just need some $$.

Go and get Neatvideo.
It will have no problem with this footage.
IF you should start loosing detail (but I don't think so) try to use it twice with half the amount of noise reducton.
Neatvideo is IMO a must have for digital shoots.
I always use it to get rid of the digital noise and then render a bit of grain afterwords. Next time you should even take a printed NEatvideo chart with you in those circumstances to get the best possible Noise Profile and superior results.

Another vote for NeatVideo here.

Its not the type of plug-in one asks "is there any cheaper way?"

Its the type of plug-in one begs "What price?! Any price!.. Name the price!!"

Its not even priced appropriately... there are so many more expensive plug ins that do so much less, and poorly..

Thanks Kim.

The neat video demo seemed to work wonders. From what I can gather on their site, I need to pay $99 for the pro version (to process HD footage). Guessing this is correct?

Where does one find such a chart?

Thanks Kim.

yes - I'd gladly pay more.... You'll see you will agree.

I have yet to actually use it but here is the one on their website...

Yes the one at the Top is it.
The one for Digital Camera profiling.
They are going for a general profile, but it's best to print it out on a matte paper and shoot it on set, slightly out of focus, to not catch the paper structure, under the keylight of your Shot. Use this to generate a profile for the scene. This way is the best, cause the noise structure varies under different lighting situations and Kelvin settings in Camera.
Neatvideo confirmed this workflow in an E-mail to be the most accurate.
The Chart is best to use, because these are the colors that Neatvideo uses to create the profile.
