  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Low Light RED-mini?

Try it Mark! And yes, it's dark magic, but works just fine in bright light too! Only thing to be aware of is the possibility of motion artifacts from the averaging, but when I did a test with one of my daughters dancing around a dimly lit room, I could see that motion got smoother, but I didn't exactly see anything much in the way that was distracting.

ok..
Thats a test I'll be doing shortly.
I assume i'll find this setting easily within camera settings. ?

Cheers Graeme.

Yeah, under recording->frame processing if I remember rightly. For motion work set it to 4 frame average, and then re-adjust your fps. Just make sure your resolution is such that you can achieve at least 96fps, which when 4x averaging is turned on, will turn back to 24fps.

Oooooohhh... that makes sense. I have a Scarlet Dragon and tried it but I was going as high as I could go and just being able to achieve 23.98 and stopping there. That was 2K at 8:1. More testing to do.

The reason the A7S is so sensitive is that it is only 4K / 12MP spread over a Full-Frame sensor, so those are pretty large photosites individually.

That's why I would like to see a Vista Vision sensor at 6K instead of 8K, to increase the photosite sizes.

The Raven weighs 3.5lbs. And should be clean at 2000 ISO. Maybe even 4000 ISO like it's Weapon big brother.

Sounds pretty good to me.

I hope you're kidding. 2000 ISO is noisy. 4000 ISO is nearly unusable. I wouldn't go above 1280 ISO personally.

I've been thinking more and more lately that I'd rather take a 4.5K RED FF sensor like this one over 8K. Better pixels > more pixels imo.

Larger photosites are more effective collectors of light. Combine that with keeping the noise down in the system and noise reduction circuitry, you will have an effective combination. But if you start out with smaller photosites, you have a bigger hill to climb in terms of increasing sensitivity. Just look at the A7SII versus the A7RII, the one with the larger photosites is the more sensitive, but both share the same noise reduction technology.

Not arguing with you David, but rather trying to understand, it seems to me the pixels aren't all that large in the Sony A7s. Spec pixel width is 8.4 microns (sensor length size divided by photo sites ) Thus, a7s is 35.6 mm divided by 4240 photo sites equal 8.4 microns. By comparison, Alexa open gate is 28.17mm divided by 3414 photo sites equals 8.25 microns. Not much difference there but obviously A7s reaches into the dark way more. Is there not some massive amount of amplification going on in the A7s combined with NR?

Have you LOOKED at recent Weapon R3Ds?

Weapon Dragon appears to be MUCH cleaner than Epic Dragon.

They are NOT the same.

Matt Ryan has a clip on that test that's 20:1 at 4K, and is clean as a whistle at 4000 ISO, and appears to have no penalty adjusting ISO from 320 to 5000 iso. I was BLOWN AWAY.
