Just took the commercial I shot this weekend into RCX and looked at all the color sciences.

Red Color and Gamma 2 vs 3

Red Color and Gamma 2 vs 3

Here is another RGRC2 v RGRC3 comparison for those keen to compare. The files are 50MB so I've uploaded them to Dropbox for the moment. I'll keep them there for a week or so. Both images are straight out of camera with no adjustments except the first is RCRG 2 and the second I've changed to RCRG 3 in RedCine X Pro. I really like RG3 and RC3. They give for much better default settings. You can see that the images have more pop: the mids are sitting higher, the blacks are crushed, the skin tones are warmer and the overall image is more saturated. Later, I tried adding RedCine X Pro's 'film look' to the image as well and it was looking really filmic.

Does anyone know how to get the "auto-update" out of REDCINE-X or where I can download the new version so I can access the new color space???

I have to say I really like red color 3, but am not so sure about red gamma 3. I'm getting stronger blacks and a more contrasty footage, but there's something about red gamma 2 gradient that I love... The good thing is you can always change this in redline if you don't like it!

This was shot in REALLY low and very ugly, straight down florescent overhead lighting. We applied RC3 and RG3. The blacks got a little more crushed when we compressed it down to JPEG, the original is more gradual from the grays to blacks. It did a nice job on the noise in the deep blacks on the clip as well. We like the new profile, rich colors with slightly crunchy blacks, but still a reasonable gradient to black. It really brought out the slight red reflection of the gloves on the punching bag!

Count me in as a major fan of RC3; I no longer wish for my old pal, Rec 709. Very client-pleasing images on the monitor.

Now if we can just get audio playback and a couple of back-ordered items, it will be Rock and Roll!

Good shooting and best regards,

Leo

Sergio, I completely hear you. I can't help it, it's like vegemite and film grain. I have a taste for it now. It seems to just slide into highlights in a way I actually really love. But I love the new colour sciences too! So it's just a win win :))

The skin tone/red channel changes are obvious, but I'm really interested to see what's gong on with the blue channel and shadow detail and noise, as it seems there may have been some significant headway there too.

Best

Same here. I tried redgamma3 last night and noticed it crushes a lot more of the blacks. Had one shot with no crushed blacks on redgamma2, then switched to redgamma3 and the noise bar raised about 15%. Wondering what the reasoning for this is? Also used it on camera. When using False Color and Exposure tool in video mode redgamma3 will flag off more of the image in the purple range than redgamma2. Of course, the RAW goal posts don't change.

This has also got me feeling to stay in redgamma2 instead.

If the RAW goal posts don't chage doesn't matter, its more for prettier viewing on set. I

True :) The beauty of this really is that its a win win situation. I think I'll use gamma 3 when I really need to output something quick. But from my limited time with it now, its Color 3 and gamma 2 combo for the non-high end personal editing workflow where I have time to mess with the grade, color 3 and gamma 3 for the times I need a quicker grade/output, and color 3 and redlogfilm for the "send to post-house" workflow.
