  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Lots of questions

I apologize in advance, but I have looked for answers to these questions and haven't found them. So any comments or directions to other threads or tutorials are welcome!

I'm working with the most recent versions of Media Composer and Metafuze and the most recent Build of the RED ONE and I am on PC.

My questions are about AVID workflow.

1). How does REDCINE-X help someone who wants to export to an AVID native format? Is there a way to send the choices made in REDCINE-X to Metafuze? Or do I have to export to Quicktime or DPX and then re-encode with AVID?

2). With Metafuze, after scanning the folders and adding the clips but before I add a NEW TRANSCODE, does it matter what settings are selected? In other words, if the clips are HALF GOOD & ANAMORPHIC but in the TRANSCODE I want FULL PREMIUM and PILLARS, do these need to match? I'm very confused about this.

3). I can't get any setting to apply globally in Metafuze -- It's that simple. The default settings are AVID DNxHD175, 1080 23.976p, ANAMORPHIC, HALF GOOD, etc. -- but if I want to change that for all clips in the group then I select all or CTRL+A and it selects everything but only applies a setting to the last clip I had selected. I've watched the Metafuze Tutorial a dozen times and performed exactly the operations shown, but I can't get a setting to apply universally to every clip.

4). What is OLPF?

5). I only do offline editing -- so that being said, I like to get High Quality media to work with for compositing, keying, color correction in AVID or After Effects. Is AVID DNxHD 36 good enough for these purposes?

Thank you in advance.

RE:

RE:

1). Just stick to Metafuze and export directly from there to MXF, you can apply a slight look in RED-ALERT and use this is Metafuze

2). It is the export settings which are important, nut to be safe just set them the same

3). Just Select ALL transcodes then change one and all will change

4).leave this to the graeme's and deanans of this world to explain perfectly, optical low pass filter is another way of preventing nice moire effects that might turn up

5). no... great for editing but not for the online, if you want to do compositing for online use the highest DNXHD possible

chime in MichaelP if I am wrong

Thank you both for you prompt attention to my questions.

1). So, I am PC -- so I RED ALERT is not available for me. Which means I would have to use REDCINE-X for reframing, first color correction, white balance, etc. Does that mean my only option for getting from REDCINE-X to AVID is to export as a Quicktime file and then reimport into AVID?

2 & 3). I have done exactly as you said -- I have selected all transcodes and changed one and that is the only one that changes. Same goes for the group clips before or after I add a transcode such as ANAMORPHIC, HALF GOOD, etc. It doesn't matter what I do, my changes to the transcodes have to be done one by one. As far as I can remember, I could do all of them at once with Metafuze 1.3, but now I have to change every setting on every clip and every transcode manually.

Any thoughts -- this is VERY time consuming, as you can imagine!

Thanks again!

4). What is OLPF?

I don't know what it is in terms of the AVID or post, but it stands for Optical Low Pass Filter. In a digital camera, it's a filter that sits in front of the sensor and basically softens fine, high-frequency detail that might normally causing aliasing artifacts (moire patterns, twittering, etc.) due to interaction with the fixed grid pattern of photosites in the sensor.

REDCINE-X

REDCINE-X

As Michael P mentioned there is a Step-by-Step guide on avid.com/red or avid.com/metafuze

I have no PC infront of me but REDCINE-X for PC can not differ that much fron MAC. AVID export directly to MXF is enabled so you can grade and export from there, but it will take time if you do not have a rocket also it is still Beta and am not sure how stable it is yet.

How much material are we talking about? (in GB's)

Marcus

Thank you, Job ter Burg. So this is a problem you've encountered as well? Does anybody know a work around?

Marcus, I'm looking at 118 GB -- I didn't realize there was MXF direct export from REDCINE-X. Is there a step-by-step guide or tutorial? The only video tutorial I have found is not up to date.

Thanks again!

There's a ROCKETCINE-X step by step on avid.com/metafuze. REDCINE-X does not have the ALE export part of it done as of yet - but it does make AAF and MXF. Reading through the step by step that is there should help you make way with REDCINE-X. Most, but not all the steps are the same.

Michael

Also be aware that latest builds including build 90 still dont correctly scale aspect ratios that are not 16:9.

Michael

Michael - Thanks for your attention to this throughout the day. I appreciate all the direction I'm getting, but I'm still confused about a few things. I am on PC -- so ROCKETCINE-X is not an option. So REDCINE-X and Metafuze are my only options.

REDCINE-X does not have the ALE export part of it done as of yet - but it does make AAF and MXF

1). As far as I can tell, there is only DPX, QUICKTIME and TIFF exports from REDCINE-X -- am I missing the MXF and AAF output you mentioned
2). If there is no MXF Support, does REDCINE-X help me at all? If so, how? Does saving a project as a .RCX help me in any way?
I'm new to this whole workflow, although I can usually figure things out for myself, but this has left me totally confused. I love AVID and I am dedicated to making it work, but without the ability to color correct before editing and the lack of ability to universally apply settings in Metafuze (as of 2.1) has me frustrated.

Thanks again for your time and direction.

I have been testing REDCINE-X on a Mac. I need to look at the PC version to see how close it is to the Mac. On Mac version, go to export, add a new setting, and in there with DPX, etc, you will see "Avid AAF & MXF" as an option. Is that not on the PC version? REDCINE-X will make a folder of AAF (pointers and metadata) and a folder of MXF (essence of picture and sound).

We are working on a quick update to fix the batch transcode in MetaFuze - it's strange that it works on our system in the lab. Need to get more info as to what OS people are using this on, etc.

Michael

Just looked - REDCINE-X on Windows does not yet have the Avid SDK in it that allows for AAF/MXF direct export. It is still in the works... I will see where we are MetaFuze wise on Monday.

Thanks for your attention to this concern. So REDCINE-X export to MXF in Windows is a no go at this point.

In case it helps, the specs on my computer are as follows:
Windows Vista 64
2.4 GHZ Intel Quad Core
8GB CORSAIR RAM
ASUS P5K Motherboard
NVIDIA QUADRO FX 1500

Thanks again!

Hello, all. i am in front of a project that will be recorded with anamorphic lens.
Can i expect solution for anamorphic aspect ration conversion during the metafuze transcoding or i will render anamorphic 2:1 as 16:9 and little deformed image?

also theres is something special to take care regarding edl exports from avid MC timeline for later scratch conform and grading?

the idea is to do 1 light rsx in red alert and use this metadata for batch transcoding anamorphic r3d build 21 into 1080p DNxHD36 mxf in metafuze 2.1

any advice for this workflow will be apreciated.

Where will the transcoding be done to DNxHD36?

Michael

Hi Michael. The editor call for 1080p and less heavy codec. is for offline purposes.
BUT i also will recommend him to use a intermediate bitrate to ensure a decent quality at that frame size.
is there any restrictions in terms of codec options and media composer version that the editor run? i dont have an avid to test. the same occurs to me in the past so i am only i charge of the transcodings and the workflow design. the movie will be conformed/graded/finished in assimilate scratch.

DNxHD 36 is a great offline codec for HD work. Looks great, and offers lots of storage. (~20 hours for 300GB). My question was around which application were you going to use to make the dailies.

You can get a full functioning Media Composer that runs for 30 days from www.avid.com if you want to test and design your workflow.

Michael

OK its good to know about codec perfomance i will look to that in QT.
I ask for the trial. will this include the tool for test the edl creation and load it in scratch?
What about anamorphic stuff? is any workaround?

regards
