So, I just picked up the LOTR trilogy on Blu Ray, and man, this looks amazing. My TV is only 720p, but this still looks and sounds absolutely amazing. Crystal clear picture and sound.

So, I would definitely recommend picking it up. 100% worth it. Especially considering it's extremely cheap for a 9-disc set that includes 3 blu ray movies.

except for the fact that they f*$%ed everyone over by delaying the EXTENDED VERSION
until after all the suckers buy this Theatrical Version SET.

Join the BOYCOTT. Do NOT buy this version. Make the distribs pay for their insolence!

Blu Ray is the way to go no matter what, my True 1080P Sony System plays it incredibly up to 300", that was what we had at the Ketchframe Studios Vegas.

Agree with you Tim, but unfortunately they plan to do the same with Avatar!!

The studios have such a control is not even funny, and they milk it any way they can..

I will release every one of my projects form the start in Blu Ray and or Standard DVD with extended version and off course the BTS which will never ship with out.

I'm so with you on this one Tim, it's super frustrating. I already own the SD theatrical version, and the SD extended version sets, and a stand alone title or two.

The extended versions of these films are markedly better, and I for one am NOT buying anything until the Blu-ray extended versions ship.

Although I have not seen the extended version of Fellowship of the ring or Two towers, the extended version of Return of the King alone is worth the wait. They left some amazing scenes out of the theatrical version.

Fellowship looks pretty average for a Blu-ray release and all three suffer from visible DVNR in parts. TTT and ROTK look a bit sharper because of their DI workflow.

I'm not surprised by this at all really, they did the same thing with the DVD releases.

All this means is that the extended editions will have some really cool features, obviously the commentary tracks maybe some new stuff as well.

Indeed. LOTR1 is an inconsistent mess with poor DNR popping up regularly. LOTR 2 and 3 had full DIs and look better, but DNR artifacts are not rare there either. These films are from the early DI days and it really shows compared to the current state of the art.

i have the extended versions on DVD but they're so damn long i might just get the theatrical on blu ray

I have to admit a preference for the theatrical versions. Those were perfect- especially if you're not a super purist or completest about seeing more book scenes visualized. Pacing-wise they just feel better. The extended versions each feel more like the 2-day miniseries versions of the books.

I agree with you Noah, but I also disagree. The extended versions are pretty much the only versions I've seen since the films were in theatres, so, watching the theatrical versions again they seem to be lacking a lot of story elements and such that simply add to it. Though I'll admit that the extended versions do contain a lot of filler.

The point, however, of buying the extended version is not to be forced to look at the extended scenes - but to have the choice to do so and the choice not to, whichever you feel more like doing at any particular viewing occasion. :driving:

No one's putting a gun to my head to buy these Blu-rays. The DVDs look pretty solid on our 720p projector anyway. I think I'll wait for the 3D 15th anniversary edition 2K version...

I second that.

Look at the difference between LOTR1 and The lovely Bones. Both are directed by Peter Jackson and shot by Andrew Lesnie on 35mm with ultra primes.

The Lovely Bones (2009)

Saving Private Ryan (1998) 1080p bluray looks fantastic.

are you sure?
in the extras of the fellowship of the ring they say they grade on Colossus (now lustre) a 2K DPX... But maybe the scanner at the time were worse (even if tehre is only 1 year of diference betweiin FOTR an TT...)

BTW... There are rumors now that "The Thin Red Line" is being mastered to Bluray by Criterion and should be out this year!

I heard the same thing. Sounds good. They just did Days of Heaven.

Oh, good to know! I've always wanted to watch Days of Heaven, knowing it's one of the most beautifully shot films, but I've only ever been able to get my hands on some awful looking DVDs that I could never quite stomach viewing on our big screen. I'll have to check out the Bluray.

On a side note there are so many amazing looking films that have had such horrible transfers. I was just watching my copy of The Graduate a few nights ago and it looked as if I were piping it in from 200 miles away on a set of rabbit ears (at least the version I have... not sure if there are any better ones out there)!

Can't wait until they decide to put out Barry Lyndon in Bluray... that should look stunning.
