Hi everyone,
As the title says, I'm looking to Looking to put together a R1 MX BT kit on the cheap.

My priorities are cost and weight.

Is there an online guide on what to get (surely someone has made one), or any recommendations? I'm starting from zero.

I'm primarily a fashion photographer and have recently started to direct commercials/fashion films.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

I'd recommend doing a search as that will dig up countless threads but for starters:
- Use still lenses or lightweight cine lenses
- screw-in filters instead of mattebox
- lightweight battery mounts (for handheld use battery belt)
- SSDs instead of Red Drives
- Use Red 5.6" lcd or lightweight monitor/EVF from Zacuto or SmallHD
- Keep on-camera accessories to a minimum
- Use third party lens mount such as Allstar or ProLock

Good time to be getting into a R1.

i tested marshall Sdi monitor with Red1 Mx and cant see menus on 720p mode.I get menus on DVI option but colors looks messed up
So please answer this HDMI/SDI works at the same time? any chance to see menus via HDMI or SDI?

HDMI and SDI both work at the same time. You will get a different resolution image out of HDMI depending on whether RED EVF and or RED LCD are also hooked up too. Download the RED User Guide from RED.com to see all the menu options. https://s3.amazonaws.com/rdc_us/system/downloads/files/63/build_31.6.16_manuals.zip?1308726000

I picked up the red one evf (the old model) and the cable and the arm mount. What is the cheapest, lightest way to connect that puppy to the camera for handheld use (besides grip tape, lol).

These are the two things I got (am getting) for the top of the camera. DSMC top mount and red top handle. Can I attach that arm mount to one of these?

You should be able to screw the Israeli arm for the EVF into one of the 1/4-20 threaded holes in the top of the DSMC top mount.

Awesome. Tom, Thanks. Hopefully you are on the RED payroll with all the assistance you offer ;)

Nope, not on the RED payroll, lol...just happy to help people the same way other people here and at RED helped me when I was starting out...

This is again very helpful information from you Tom!

It would be best to use my existing Monitor. Although it only goes via HDMI and no RED LCD attached.

But the Red One Operation Guide Page 10 states:
Only if a Red EVF or RED LCD is connected the HDMI output can also support a 1280x848 resolution video output with operation menu overlays.

So it seems that this won't work.

Yes it should work for menus and waveforms.

Also, one should consider the Zacuto EVF...excellent and lightweight. It also comes with a RED ONE viewfinder profile...

Wow, Zacuto EVF really shows all the menu they have a special mode for that.. saw it on their demo.
Cool stuff.
