  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

LOOKING TO BUY - RAVEN BRAIN and / or Package in AUSTRALIA

Gave them a call and they quoted me something close to $22K for a Raven kit - Seemed a bit excessive no ?

On the surface it does but it depends as to what accessories were included in the kit? How many batteries and media mini mags?
I would go to the RED site and compare the same deal as you were offered but as if you were ordering from RED.
One thing you need to keep in mind is that you need to include GST, import duty and freight to the RED store price.
Below is a guess as I do not know what the import duty is;
Red Raven Brain $6950 US
DSMC2 base package $5643 US
Total US $12,593
Converted to AU $16,848
GST $1684
Import duty ??????
Freight ???????
Maybe $19 - $20,000 ????

Ahh, I got this one, fellow Aussie here.

Unfortunately our government likes to railroad us hard at any chance we get, when we import cameras from other countries they hit us hard with all types of taxes, VAT, whatever all that nonsense is.
So yeah, the Raven becomes 10ish G, accessories another 10ish G's. I think they hold the camera ransom at customs until they get their share. Dragon Image covers those charges.

What is crazy to me is they do the same for the Black Magic a Aussie made camera, charge in USD then tax us like a import. Where is the national support man! f'em I say hey.

But yeah, I (reluctantly) swapped out my online purchase to go through Dragon Image and let them sort it out, the staff there are the most friendly and approachable of any film gear sellers in my state.

Visit them and have a bigger chat, good people to know from my perspective anyways.

I have found Vince in Queensland Dragon Image to be good. I have only spoken on the phone but he was very helpful.
10% GST and import duty is bad enough but if it is any consolation I remember the bad old days of 33% sales tax on cameras!

Holy shit that's a bunch mate! Interesting, I didn't know!

Yeah Vince, he has the right energy man,
Plenty of others I deal with seem so tired and unenthused, for a long time I wanted a job like that.
I thought it would be a privilege to work around this specialist gear. But oh well!

I am lucky doing video for a university and was eligible for education discount which helps.
Would be great to bring a greater quality to this environment in some respects. :)
 
Hey guys, any updates on this? I'm trying to get myself a good deal on a raven kit in Sydney. Any ideas where to grab the besy deal and at what price?? cheers mates.

Vince is a great guy I can vouch for him. Import taxes and the US$ are a pain at the moment though :/ I need more SSD's for my kit but god damn, need at least one kidney to live.
