Hello all. Loving the Red and massive respect going out to you patient people who have waited for this fantastic product, and congrats' to those who now have them.

After 7 years of rewrites and remortgages we are filming Elevator Gods in the UK, (Mid Aug 08 to Mid oct - approx 8 weeks), now a self funded micro budget feature about 80's tribute bands. Think the Full Monty meets The Commitments - for the MTV generation.

We were planning to shoot on super 16 but our finances didn't come to fruition, and we have of recent - had a keen eye on Red, so we need to ask the Red community for help (and try avoid getting a kick in the perineum for jumping the queue).

In the last 8 weeks from reading the forums I have fallen in love with Red.

If anyone has a camera they can sell, or reservation I would be happy to pay over the asking for your troubles. Or if anyone wants to get involved with a camera it would be an honor to accommodate you here in the beautiful city of Old York.

Have cash, and can travel/wire, pretty much anywhere to pick up.

Please check out our promo teaser for a giggle, - shot with much hassle on film and an XL1s. www.happyourfilms.com/trailer.htm

Happy days. Ph. email to info@happyourfilms.com

(Seek forgiveness from the community for pushing in but it's for a worthy cause).

Hate to be a wet blanket, but if you're on a micro budget and you're doing a movie with popular 80's music in it, how are you going to get the rights to all the music?

Buy? Why not rent?

Buy? Why not rent?

Hi Peter-

If you guys are starving for dough, rent the thing. It would be available NOW, with full kit, and ready to go. Check out the thread here: http://www.reduser.net/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=17
or contact any one of the 4K ninjas. Red rental rates vary pretty widely, but are still significantly advantageous to say ... film processing, not being able to shoot because you don't have the kit, or buying. Consider that an approximate quote of one months worth of equipment rental (full red outfit plus zeiss superspeeds, tripod, etc.) will cost you less than the camera, and will get you great advice as well as personal service. Also, as far as I know, reservations are non transferable.

Your project looks like a lot of fun, and I can't wait to see it in theaters!
Best,
Drew
#4216 = some time next year :(

Hey thanks Drew. I would consider hiring for sure, (price dependent) as the expertise of a camera op/dop would be invaluable. We do have a fantastic dop but Red would be fairly new to him. We were shooting in three segments over 8 weeks in total, which was more the reason to buy our own.

Ninja's you say? 4 of them... do they like UK weather?

http://www.4kninjas.net/Home.html - my bet is it will still cost you less (and you will have fewer if any headaches - worth the money right there) to hire Evin Grant or another Ninja for a one off project like this. And they are currently available. You don't need to take a number (or at least you can get shortlisted!)

Were the wait not going to screw you I would say hang on to the idea of ownership - but if you've got a film to make and money to do it - make the film any way you can that will get you the best bang for the buck. Any other decision is baffling. Your DP will hug you and buy you beer - and focus on being a master of frame, light, and movement as opposed to being confounded by a camera.

Again, break a leg - and let me know when its in a theater near me! ;)

hi peter..
sorry to hear about the situation you find yourself... i absolutely agree with the other boys.. i think your only option is to rent. i dont think anyone is going to sell there serial number or camera. if the boys at 4 ninjas cant help.. there are more than 20 in Oz all can be rented and there is more than enough expertising down under. having worked on nothing men, the knowing, cedar boys, etc.... give either lemac or camera collective a bell... full kits are available, Red Feature experienced AC's, data wrangler and DIT workflow managers...

A full kit with RED Zoom lenses and Arri accessories is around $8K/Month. Add a set of Zeiss Super Speed Primes for $3,300/Month. There are many ways renting makes more sense than buying. And I'm not saying that just because I rent out my stuff ;)

Have you considered a 35mm adaptor as another option if you can't get a Red.

I expect I can lend you my Brevis, as I'll be on honeymoon for the first half of your shoot. I'm in Leeds.

Hey Peter,

We have just shot the first RED feature in the UK and are based in the North West. We may have some kit we can hire you for your shoot, depending on your needs. PM me and we can look at some options.
