My name is Benjamin Hoffman, I graduated from Columbia University and have much more of a theatre background than film having directed numerous plays such as Brecht's Jewish Wife and Ionesco's Rhinoceros. "The Muse" marks my first venture into putting actors in front of a camera and frankly I will rely heavily on you for shot composition and thus am looking for a full collaboration. That being said, I wrote The Muse to give both the actors and the DP a tremendous amount of freedom to explore the time and space between the words as you will see when you read it. Please email themusefilm@gmail.com and I will gladly email you a copy.

We'd be shooting just 3 days the last week of August (29-31) in Brooklyn and Manhattan with probably one half day for B-roll sometime in September.

To be upfront, we have no budget. We are spending what money we do have on food to keep everyone happy. Luckily I have a friend who is a professional chef who agreed to work for free so I can guarantee you will be very well fed! Also, I understand that insurance is a real necessity when working with such expensive gear and we will definitely pull that together (have about 500$) if you don't have your own already.

That said, we have an EXTREMELY talented and motivated group working on this short. We have a girl flying in from Sweden to play the Muse (a beautiful model with Ford) and 6 additional models for one sequence in the film. Michael Eklund (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm1002664/) will play the painter.

Our art department is helmed by Gaba Vallone (the equally talented daughter of John Vallone, http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0885200/) and consists of many talented Brooklyn based artists.

We have a professional sound man with his own equipment, an Arri kit and a 1.2 HMI. Also my roommate is a professional AC (ugly betty, wonderful malady's) and has a large network of NY based AC's who are willing to come on board.

Thus far, the only money spent has been on food and transportation.

We are looking for an extremely talented, motivated, get it done DP with an outstanding reel and his/her own RED/lenses to come on and capture what is sure to be an amazing project. Again, please email themusefilm@gmail.com for the script and include a link to your reel and your equipment list.

Thank you for your time and consideration.
Best,
Benjamin Hoffman

Kwan, I understand that this arrangement might not be for you, but before even posting here, I have received 4 applications of people with full RED packages who after reading the script signed onto the project but the dates simply didn't work out. It is a very artistic project with some serious acting talent. I understand that it is natural to expect to bring in revenue when you make such a serious investment but I said upfront what we are willing to give and am being very open. Obviously, the majority of people would not be willing to do this but I'm not looking for everyone, I'm looking for one talented guy/girl who wants to make a visually stunning movie with amazing actors and an amazing art department. That said, I do not feel you need to make fun of the fact we have no money.

And Zakaree Sandberg, thank you for your suggestion. We have an HVX200 with 35 adaptor but I want to see if we could find someone with a RED and bring the production value up as much as possible. For the record, this is my own project; I have written and will be directing it. My producer has produced many theatre productions (with budgets in the 100,000) but knows nothing about technical camera stuff so I volunteered to deal with that.

Thank you,
Benjamin

Hey Musicb good luck finding someone with your project. You should try and track down a good post guy because shooting it is just the beginning. Talk to your roommate to because he/she should know some great contacts for you and your project. If it's worth anything I have seen plenty of great pieces done with HVX35combo.

EDIT: Just wondering, what will RED bring to your project that an HVX wouldnt?

we all want to shoot our projects ( doesn't matter the budget) on what we think would look best ... many camera persons are building reels and they might find a project (free, low $$) that they think would be helpful for future work or they want the experience....
so you ask for a Red and in the end you may settle for the HVX ...

asking for free ( whatever) didn't start with Red ... back in early 80's persons were asking for free 35mm camera's and free film ( short ends) for their no budget projects ...

Pat,
Thank you for the luck! The guy who lives on the second floor of my building is a pro editor (supports his family of 4 on it) and offered to work for free in trade for house sitting while they go away for a month so we have very good post lined up. I know working with RED footage can be a nightmare in post but he has a lot of experience with it so I'm not worried at all. And the RED is just a better camera than the HVX to put it simply. I have the HVX available and if we settle on it, c'est la vie but we're a month away and I'd REALLY like to get a RED. I've had a lot of professional writers/producers read the script (I am a reader at the Weinstein Company) and believe it really has festival potential. And yes, my roomate has put me in touch with a lot! of her friends who all have been willing and able but not available as they're all working on projects back to back.

Donatello,
Yes exactly! I don't want to offend anyone with my request, just putting it out there to see who responds and actually received a few already. And to be clear, I'm not offering $0, there is about $500-600 for sure and we're working on doubling that but I assumed that'd just be enough for insurance. But irrespective of the money, I am looking for someone who will be passionate about the project and that can only happen once he/she reads the script (hint hint: email themusefilm@gmail.com) hehe. Thanks for the encouragement either way.

Best,
Benjamin

It is often unreasonable for people to ask you to "work" for free.

But I don't see that to be the case here.

This is an independently funded endeavor with creative talent involved.

Read the script before you write it off.

Freebies often launch careers.

Good luck with it Benjamin.

I threw together a website really quickly last night (many updates to come) but was able to include script available for download:

Dylan, thank you for the kind words. It is definitely a passion project, and your work is awesome by the way!
