Hey all.

So I'm still new to the game of recording audio off camera, and for the past few months if I have had to do it I've done so by using my laptop's onboard mic or my old camera with it's directional mic attached. However, I'd like to start working with a proper audio recording system, and I was wondering where I should start. I'm open to any suggestions, and thanks in advance!

I think I'll probably get the h4n. It seems like the best option. I do already have a mic like the KE66. I've just been unable to figure out a way to interface it onto the Red for scratch audio, so I record to a separate device. Thanks for the pointers guys.

The h4n is unbeatable for what it is. It doesn't take a lot to learn how to use it. It's cheap. Move up from there.

Borrow one for a day and see how it works for you.

for few bucks more you can also buy the:

I have it for quickies and I can get 6 XLR'S on it!!! Amazing!! (with an accessory they sell)/

It's so nice to have choices! ;-)

Get one of these

and one of these to get scratch audio into your camera

The audio in this clip was recorded from three Rode NT2a mikes as a Decca tree via a Sound Devices 302 and a Zoom H4n as recorder. The H4n is good at an amazing low price. When you think of what 50 times that would have got you 30 years ago?? They do have their vices. If you listen carefully to the first descending woodwind, you will hear faint harmonic artifacts that sound like somebody talking in the background. To be fair, the recording environment was quite hostile. For dialogue they are quite adequate. The line-in, like much consumer/prosumer gear these days, does not conform to established standards for audio chains which operate at unity gain.
